Overwatch 2 Dating Sim: Short, Sweet, and Surprisingly Addictive

Fans have been asking for a dating sim for years, and now they’ll get one as part of Overwatch 2’s Valentine’s Day event. The shooter features a wide variety of romantically appealing characters, and as a result, it has cultivated a rabid fanbase that enjoys speculating about which heroes would make the ideal dating partners.

Loverwatch, a miniature dating sim released in honor of Valentine’s Day (it’s playable through Feb. 28), is Blizzard’s answer to this persistent and vocal demand.

Too bad Loverwatch has such doubts. Each of Mercy and Genji’s potential romantic paths follows the same basic outline. With the help of Hanzo, er, and Cupid in a pink toga, players go on three dates with the hero of their choice.

Players can literally sweep the hero off their feet if they choose the correct responses. If you don’t impress your dates, you’ll be going home alone.

That’s an adorable notion, but it’s ruined by the self-referential tone of the narration. Both Cupid and the protagonist’s internal monologue, as well as your date, frequently make references to Overwatch. A blush as rosy as Mercy’s complexion covers Mercy’s face. She spends a lot of her time helping out the hurting DPS, that’s for sure.

It’s like Genji! It’s time to treat Genji’s wounds. Do you still keep the meme in your mind? You do recall that many Genji players complain about feeling ill and in need of a cure, right? That was just mentioned on Loverwatch!

Hooked on You: A Dead by Daylight Dating Sim, developed in part by Psyop, was another game that frequently turned to breach the fourth wall by nudging the player and making references, and this trend continued in Loverwatch. A run of Hooked on You would be long enough to allow for a few true moments of bonding, perfect for a slow-burning romance.

Loverwatch can’t afford to slow down for this; the plot is moving too quickly toward the next joke about the official Overwatch cookbook. There are a few touching moments that help flesh out the characters, such as when Mercy expresses her hope that people will finally recognize her as Dr. Angela Ziegler, but then the antics resume.

It’s a shame because the idea of an Overwatch dating sim sounds like a lot of fun. It’s disappointing to receive such a ridiculous response after all these years of pleading for this product. Loverwatch is designed to be welcoming to newcomers, but I had hoped for more information on such a fascinating premise. The Hanzo skin, at least, is very adorable.
