Should You Upgrade From PS4 to PS5 Before GTA 6?

Analysis: This guide combines official information from Rockstar Games and Sony with the writer’s advice on choosing a console. Prices are U.S. list prices as of October 2026.

If you still play on a PlayStation 4 and want Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, the short answer is yes: you will need a new console. Rockstar is releasing the game on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Sony’s own store page is blunt about it: the game “will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles.”

The harder questions are which PS5 to buy, what it costs now that prices have gone up, and what happens to everything on your PS4. Here is what the official sources say.

Will GTA 6 come to PS4 later?

Nothing suggests it will. Rockstar’s GTA VI page lists two platforms, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, under “Coming November 19, 2026.” The PlayStation Store listing answers the PS4 question directly: “Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles.”

A PC version has not been announced either, so for now a current-generation console is the only way to play on day one. You can follow every confirmed detail on our GTA 6 hub.

How much does a PS5 cost in October 2026?

More than it used to. Sony raised prices on April 2, 2026, and the current U.S. list prices are:

ModelU.S. list priceBuilt-in storageDisc drive
PS5 Digital Edition$599.99825GBNo (add-on available)
PS5$649.991TBYes
PS5 Pro$899.992TBNo (add-on available)

Add the game itself and the bill grows again. GTA VI costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, according to Rockstar’s pre-order announcement. That is well below the $150 figure that circulated in an old GTA 6 price rumor.

Do you need a disc drive for GTA 6?

Not really. Rockstar has confirmed that the boxed version contains “a download code inside the box” rather than a disc, so even physical buyers will download the game. That makes the Digital Edition a sensible choice if GTA VI is your main reason to upgrade. We covered a related wrinkle in Japan, where GTA 6 download codes expire after 170 days.

Both physical and digital buyers can start pre-loading on November 12, 2026, a week before launch.

Is the PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?

The PlayStation Store marks GTA VI as “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” and Rockstar’s own page says the game plays best on PlayStation 5. What neither has published is what the Pro version actually improves, such as resolution or frame rate. Claims about specific Pro performance figures come from leaks, not from Rockstar or Sony.

That leaves the Pro as a $300 premium over the Digital Edition for benefits that have not been spelled out. For most PS4 owners, the standard or Digital Edition is enough to play GTA VI as Rockstar designed it. The Pro makes more sense if you already planned to buy it for other games.

How much storage will GTA 6 need?

Rockstar has not announced an install size, so any number you see online is an estimate. If storage worries you, the PS5 can be expanded with an M.2 SSD. Sony’s support page lists the requirements: a PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive between 250GB and 8TB, with a heatsink or similar cooling.

What happens to your PS4 games and saves?

Most of them come with you. According to Sony, more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5, and you can transfer games and saved data from a PS4 to a new PS5 during or after setup. PlayStation Plus members can also move saves through cloud storage, with up to 100GB included in the membership.

One thing will not carry over: there is no official word on GTA V or GTA Online progress moving to GTA VI. Sony’s store page describes GTA VI as “a single-player experience,” and Rockstar has not announced any link to GTA Online.

Can you trade in your PS4?

In the U.S., yes, at least for a few more weeks. Through PlayStation Direct’s trade-up offer with Back Market, you get cash for your PS4 plus a $50 voucher toward a PS5 or PS5 Pro bought from PlayStation Direct. The offer is for U.S. residents only, cannot be used on pre-orders, and vouchers must be redeemed by October 31, 2026.

What about switching to Xbox instead?

GTA VI is also coming to Xbox Series X|S, but switching is not a cheap shortcut. Microsoft raised Xbox console prices on August 1, 2026, by $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models. Moving platforms also means leaving your PlayStation library behind, so for most PS4 owners the PS5 is the simpler upgrade.

The bottom line

Waiting on a PS4 is not an option for GTA VI. If the game is the main reason you are upgrading, the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99 covers it, because the boxed game is only a download code anyway. Buy before October 31 if you want the PS4 trade-in bonus, and give yourself time to move your saves before the November 12 pre-load window opens.
