Created and released by Acid Wizard Studio, Darkwood is a survival horror video game. On July 24, 2014, the game entered Steam’s Early Access beta phase; on August 17, 2017, the game’s official release for Windows, macOS, and Linux was made available. Darkwood Gameplay
The game’s environment is partially open, and additional places are unlocked as the player advances through the tale. There are many plot branches that may change various parts of the environment, a crafting system, a day/night cycle, commerce, NPC interaction, a skill system, stealth, fighting, and more.
During the day, the player has the option of going out and exploring the environment, scavenging for supplies at several spots spread out over each biome, staying in the hideaway and mending doors, and barricades, or making new items and improvements at the workbench. The player may “cook” hallucinogens on his stove throughout the day to acquire access to new abilities; but, for every good ability the player selects, they must also choose an opposing, negative ability.
The player is trapped in the hideaway until daybreak and must fight off any would-be attackers until help arrives. Planning a defense plan is essential, as players may set traps and block doors and windows to slow down any attackers.
The trader’s respect for the player will increase if they make it through the night, allowing them to barter for more valuable goods. If the character dies overnight, they will not get any reputation when they respawn in the morning. If the player dies while scavenging, they will lose half of their items and have the remaining items marked on the map. The consequences of dying, whether temporary or permanent, increase with the difficulty level.
The tale develops in response to the player’s decisions and the actions of non-playable characters. Assisting one over another may change the game’s conclusion and even affect the outcomes of side stories involving other NPCs. In Chapter 2, the game’s map changes, the unlocked areas from the first chapter become inaccessible, and new features and characters are added.
Depending on the player’s choices, other characters from the prologue may make an appearance as well. There are two possible endings to the game, with the player’s choices affecting not just the character’s secondary storyline but also the game’s overall conclusion.

On March 5, 2013, a gameplay trailer for the game’s pre-alpha version was posted to YouTube, revealing the game to the public.
