The Serbian studio Ebb Software created Scorn, a first-person biopunk survival horror adventure game for Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Two painters, H. R. Giger, and Zdzislaw Beksiski served as inspiration for the game. The game was made available on Windows and Xbox Series X/S on October 14, 2022.

Scorn Gameplay
The player takes control of a humanoid character who finds himself in a nightmare world populated with mechanical, biological, and other-worldly creatures and architecture. The player will follow a non-linear path around the game’s environment, exploring its many interrelated locations in pursuit of answers.
The game features an array of biomechanical weaponry that may be attached to a modular base system that is surgically implanted into the player character’s body. In order to use a different weapon, the player must first remove it from the base and replace it with the desired weapon. The handgun and the three-barreled shotgun that shoots organic spikes have both been shown as major weapons.
The player begins the game with a pistol, a 6-shot weapon with little damage. It gives off a completely natural impression, even down to the mouth-like base that serves as a door to remove the pistol and replace it with the shotgun. The shotgun fires three pellets every shot and does significant damage up close but less so at farther ranges. The shotgun, like the pistol, is made entirely of organic materials. Later trailers showed off other firearms, such as a close-range pistol that triggers gates and an implosion grenade launcher.
Scorn Development
Founded in 2013, Ebb Software is a Serbian video game development company. The makers have said that they built the game so that players would feel like they were “thrown into the universe,” and as a result, very little background information is provided. The creators have stated their intention for the unpleasant setting to function similarly to a playable character. Affirmed Use of Citation Needed
The game was first revealed on November 12, 2014, with a teaser showcasing pre-alpha footage. A Kickstarter campaign for the game was launched in December 2014, however it did not reach its funding goal. A private investor provided funds for Scorn in January 2015, and the company went into full production in February of that year.
The first of two planned sections, Dasein (German: [dazan]) means “being there” in everyday German (German: da “there”; Sein “being”) and “being-in-the-world” in Martin Heidegger’s philosophy.
The game was originally intended to be published in two parts. The development team revealed in August 2018 that the game will be released as a whole rather than in installments, however, a specific release date was not specified. In September 2017, Ebb Software successfully funded its second Kickstarter campaign with €150,000.
It was announced on 7 May 2020 that the game would be published on PC and have timed console exclusivity on Xbox Series X/S, running in 4K and 60fps, and that it would not be released on the previous generation of consoles because the development team did not want to waste time making a version of the game that would be less fun to play. There are many digital distribution platforms for Scorn, including Steam, the Windows Store, and GOG.
Scorn Story
We know nothing about the major plot of Scorn beyond the live, breathing world into which our unnamed protagonist is thrust. What we do know is that our protagonist is disoriented in a surreal environment and must make a non-linear journey through a series of more foreboding locales.
It seems that the story of Scorn is the primary focus, with the only objective for players being to escape the nightmare. Although details are few at the moment, it has been confirmed by the creators that each area of the “open-ended” world will include its own unique tale, complete with puzzles and characters that have significant roles to play in the overall plot. The districts of Scorn will be laid out like a labyrinth, with several chambers and corridors to explore.
According to developer Ebb Software, “all the storyline unfolds in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the brutal realism of the live, breathing world you’re in.” However, make sure you keep your eyes peeled since the game will not have any pity for you if you fail to notice a vital detail on your tense journey. Everything happens for a reason; it’s up to you to discover what that is.
We also know from a March developer update that puzzles play a significant role in the narrative, and that the many maze-like structures the player encounter in the game eerie setting all have their own unique backstory. The creators also pointed out that the game might be a walking simulator based on the setting alone, but that it is really much more than that because of the animals and riddles players would have to solve.
