An action-adventure game released in 2009, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is based on the Ghostbusters film and television series. The PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions were produced by Terminal Reality, while the PS2, PSP, and Wii versions were developed by Red Fly Studio. After several setbacks in production and a few changes in publishing, the game finally saw release.

Atari Interactive released all versions of the game in North America; Sony Computer Entertainment Europe handled the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 3 releases in Europe. Zen Studios also produced and published a Nintendo DS game with the same name at about the same time, although it had very different gameplay and plot.
In this game, you take on the role of a new member of the Ghostbusters, a group of parapsychologists on a mission to track down and catch ghosts. The gameplay is similar to that of other third-person shooters, with the exception that players’ primary weapon is a Proton Pack, along with other technical tools, which they use to battle and capture ghosts.
In the game, the player’s character is trained by the Ghostbusters team as they investigate paranormal activity in New York City two years after the events of Ghostbusters II, in 1991.
The game has several cameos from the movie’s main characters. Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson, the actors who played the Ghostbusters in the movies, all provided their voices and likenesses for the game characters. It’s also the last time Ramis plays Egon Spengler, and the last tale he contributes to the Ghostbusters series, before his death in 2014.
In addition to writing the movies, Aykroyd and Ramis helped with the game’s screenplay. The film also included returns by William Atherton, Annie Potts, and Max von Sydow. The Ghostbusters video game features many of the film’s characters and settings, as well as many of the film’s iconic weapons and gadgets, as well as the original film’s music.
The game, as Aykroyd put it afterward, is “basically the third movie.” Positive reviews were plentiful, and over three million copies were purchased. Saber Interactive and Mad Dog Games teamed together to create a remastered edition for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on October 4, 2019.
Gameplay
All three platforms (Xbox 360, PC, PS3) have access to the identical single-player story. The campaign for the Wii and PS2 versions is quite different from one another, but otherwise, the games are the same.
The user takes control of “the Rookie,” a new member of the Ghostbusters squad, in this third-person shooter. The player takes control of the Rookie as he investigates each level’s setting for signs of paranormal activity and ghosts, either on his own or with the help of the other Ghostbusters.
With the Rookie outfitted with a PKE Meter and first-person goggles, players may transition to a first-person view. In this setting, the PKE Meter will point the way to ghosts and other paranormal objects by highlighting those that emit a paranormal field of force.
A Proton Stream may be aimed and fired to weaken ghosts, and then players can switch to a capture stream to guide the ghosts into a ghost trap. When the Proton Pack becomes too hot from constant usage, the player can’t use it as a weapon until the pack is vented. You may also “slam” ghosts and “slam” items around using the Capture Stream.
The Proton Pack is an item that may be upgraded during the game to include other types of fire, such as a Shock Blast, Slime Blower (positively charged), or Meson Collider (a Boson Dart, Stasis Stream, Slime Tether and Overload Pulse). Finding cursed objects and discovering new types of ghosts are two ways to level up as a ghost hunter.
You may get trophies and achievements on Xbox 360 for inflicting the least amount of financial damage and the most on PlayStation 3 for wreaking the most havoc. Many of the titles of the accomplishments are taken directly from lines said by characters in the movies, such as the “You Gotta Try This Pole” achievement.
Instead of a heads-up display, the player’s Proton Pack has meters on the rear that show their current health and weapon availability. If the player is not hit for a while, their health will return to full, and they may be resurrected by any remaining Ghostbusters. And if a team member falls, the player may bring them back to life. If the player and all of the current Ghostbusters are eliminated, play will resume from the last checkpoint.
