Super Mario Bros: Breakthroughs in mimetic technology on the web often occur at the intersection of cinema and the internet. They’re like erupting volcanoes that completely alter the meme landscape. Several similar eruptions have occurred thus far in the 21st century. “Shrek.” The Bee Film. Next up: Chris Pratt’s Mario movie. It was announced out of the blue earlier this week that Nintendo will be releasing a film based on the video game character and franchise known as Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros
The clip shows Bowser (Jack Black, predictably spirited) assaulting the country of penguins, who had their most notable appearance in “Super Mario 64“‘s level Cool, Cool Mountain. Bowser challenges anybody to a battle that will last just seconds until he defeats them.
To introduce Mario, we have Chris Pratt, who sounds like Chris Pratt but not at all like Charles Martinet, who provides Mario’s chirpy, “woo hoo” voice in the video games. Straight-faced, Chris Pratt remarked, “It’s been a longtime goal of mine to become Mario.” This comment aired before the teaser was released.
Like the “Isekai” tradition of Japanese science fiction narrative, in which a stranger from one country is mysteriously teleported into another new planet for adventure, this video purports to depict Mario’s first arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom.
At the conclusion of the video, we see his twin brother Luigi, voiced by Charlie Day (though we haven’t heard the character speak a phrase), being followed by ghostly Dry Bones, an homage to Luigi’s Mansion, a cartoon horror series in which the character had a leading part.
Fans have been dissecting the first official poster for the film, and now comes the trailer. Fans have urged Nintendo and the film’s production company, Illumination, to beef up the plumber’s should-be-extraordinary derriere after getting their first peek at the Mushroom Kingdom’s warp pipe system.
When series creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the voice cast last year, he did so in a rather matter-of-fact manner, prompting internet users to explode in hilarity and amazement at the sight of Pratt’s smoldering headshot. The news was already bizarre, but the following disclosures of the rest of the ensemble, including Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, made things much stranger.
The addition of Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) and Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen), two characters with ties to Mario who have become popular in their own right, is also noteworthy. Even while it’s not completely out of the question for the Kongs to show up in this movie (they make regular cameos in Mario spinoff games), their inclusion has fans wondering what Nintendo has planned.
This week, Nintendo formally announced that it has rebranded the computer-generated imagery (CG) production studio Dynamo Pictures it had just acquired as Nintendo Pictures. Previously, Nintendo has said that it has not been involved in the film adaptations of its intellectual property. The teaser for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” looks to be Nintendo’s first time exerting complete creative control over a film project.
