The Dragon Age Franchise: Falling Into The Marvel Trap?

The Dragon Age: Although the Dragon Age series from BioWare hasn’t had a core game in a while, preparations are now on for the launch of the much-awaited Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Netflix’s Dragon Age: Absolution, which featured new characters and locales while also including several gratifying references to the larger Dragon Age series, was one of the more recent additions to the overall canon. However, some fans were a little miffed to see Meredith back as an enemy.

Unsurprisingly, the plotlines, characters, and places from each prior Dragon Age game tie to one another. This makes sense, especially considering how closely the games are spaced in Thedas’ timeframe. However, there are other components, such as recurrent antagonists, that players may prefer not to encounter again.

There may be rare exceptions, such as Solas’ reappearance in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but generally speaking, running against an adversary that was previously defeated in a previous game is a recurrent issue for Marvel.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be a straight sequel to its predecessor for the first time in the series. Gamers have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to the acclaimed RPG Dragon Age: Inquisition for nearly ten years and anticipation levels are high.

Most fans find it fascinating to revisit Solas’ intricate narrative after his time as a companion in the last title, and his reappearance – this time as an enemy – makes sense. There are some evil characters, though, who have made a comeback and don’t quite fit into the plot as nicely.

Some fans may have been perplexed by Corypheus’ return as one of the key antagonists in Dragon Age: Inquisition because they thought Hawke and Varric had effectively defeated the old Darkspawn threat in Dragon Age 2.

It makes it likely that Corypheus would return in Dragon Age: Inquisition as, unbeknownst to them, he was able to transfer his essence and survive the battle. The revelation made by former Knight-Commander Meredith after Dragon Age: Absolution, however, appears far more improbable.

Dragon Age’s Marvel Problem

Meredith was claimed to still be a petrified, red lyrium-encrusted corpse in Dragon Age: Inquisition after losing in Dragon Age 2. The fact that she appears in Dragon Age: Absolution alive (though still enclosed in lyrium) begs the question.

She was also identified as the brains behind Hira’s defection and is now determined to launch a war with Tevinter. Given the backdrop of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and the Netflix series follow-up, this situation sets her up as a returning character.

While some fans appreciated the reference to Dragon Age 2, others believed that Dragon Age: Absolution wasted its chance to introduce a fresh antagonist rather than depending on well-known characters.

Dragon Age appears to be building a Marvel issue with the recurrence of these enemies and the little modification of prior tales.

It comes as no surprise that previously established elements that were established as canon be modified to enable new stories considering the enormous entertainment brand has more than a few narrative threads to keep track of.

Marvel can also tend to rely too much on returning the same antagonists rather than making an effort to create new ones, which can be annoying for viewers who want to have new foes to take on.

Although Solas will be back in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, there should also be some brand-new foes that weren’t mysteriously revived from the dead.
