OpenAI just released custom directions for ChatGPT users, so they don’t have to tell the chatbot the same things every time they talk to it, like “Write the answer in under 1,000 words” or “Keep the tone of response formal.”
The company said this tool lets you “share anything ChatGPT wants to consider in its response.” For example, a teacher can say that they teach fourth-grade math, and a coder can say which programming language they prefer when they ask for ideas. A person can also tell ChatGPT how many people are in their family, so it can help them plan meals, groceries, and vacations.
Users can tell the bot about these things when they chat, but custom directions are helpful if they often need to set the same context. The instructions also work with plug-ins, making it easy for them to suggest restaurants or flights based on where you are.
OpenAI said the tool is available to people on the Plus plan, but people in the EU and the UK won’t use it. It is still in the testing phase. Users can try this feature on the web by clicking on their name and going to Settings > Beta features > Opt into Custom directions. This can be done on iOS by going to Settings > New Features > Turn on Custom Instructions.
Notably, OpenAI says that the information shared in the customized responses will teach its API models to adapt to different instructions. “Information from how you use custom instructions will also be used to improve model performance,” the company said. For example, the model will learn how to respond to your orders without going too far.

But users can change their data control settings to turn off this setting. Gavriel Cohen, a consultant, said on Twitter that OpenAI has been testing this tool with a few users for a while now. ChatGPT gives people two boxes to write about themselves and how they want the chatbot to respond.

Once users type in their answers, the changes will be made for the next session. The company said that replies can only be up to 1,500 characters long. OpenAI said the company scans custom directions with its moderation API to see if they are unsafe
ChatGPT can choose not to save the orders or ignore them if the answers lead to breaking company rules. This ensures that users don’t type in movements that cause ChatGPT to give back harmful or mean answers.
OpenAI released the ChatGPT app for iOS in May, but only for people in the United States. But just a few weeks after that announcement, the company made it available in more than 40 countries. The new company released an iPad app that works with Siri and Shortcuts last month. The business also made it possible for users of the ChatGPT app to search the web for answers using Bing.
