Octopath Traveler 2 Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, it’s very similar to the original Octopath Traveler. There are eight playable characters, and you can switch between them while you play. As before, each playable character has their own unique “path action,” or method by which the player can have that character engage with the game’s NPCs for the purpose of gaining rewards or convincing NPCs to join the player’s cause in battle.
A new feature in the sequel is the separation of “daytime” and “nighttime” gameplay periods, with the latter featuring different course actions depending on the time of day. For instance, during the day, the player can have Hikari challenge other characters to duels in the hopes of acquiring new combat abilities, while at night, the player can use in-game currency to bribe other characters in exchange for information or stuff.
The game keeps the same turn-based battle system as the original, along with the “break” and “boost” systems. Every foe has a variety of underlying “weakness” characteristics that make them vulnerable to certain types of attacks or environmental factors. A visual cue appears onscreen when a vulnerability is found; if it is exploited often enough, the enemy suffers a temporary setback (or “break”).
The game’s “boost points” system allows players to earn extra actions each turn. “Latent Powers” are a new type of ability in the battle system, comparable to Final Fantasy’s limit breaks. These abilities require a certain amount of gauge to be filled before they can be used.

While the gameplay of Octopath Traveler II is similar to that of the original game in that it focuses on the adventures of eight playable characters, the game takes place in an entirely new world. It’s set in the world of Celestia, but unlike the medieval setting of the first game, this one feels more like it might have been made in the 1800s or 1900s. Players control a motley crew of characters, including dancer Agnes, trader Partitio, warrior Hikari, scholar Osvald, thief Throne, priest Temenos, pharmacist Castle, and hunter Hachette.
Whether it’s Agnes’s desire to become a famous dancer or Partitio’s desire to eradicate poverty through commerce, a character’s profession will often reflect their larger motivations. There is Hikari, haunted by past battles, on a quest to return home, Osvald, seeking vengeance against the man who destroyed his life, Throne, seeking freedom, Castle, seeking the truth about himself, and Temenos, seeking personal enlightenment, all while Ochette, seeking legendary creatures, travels the world in search of those who have never been found. There is more of a connection between the characters’ tales than in the last game.
Octopath Traveler 2 Development
On September 13, 2022, the game was unveiled during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, and the following week, the first live gameplay video was displayed at the Tokyo Game Show. Like its predecessors, Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, this game employs a visual style known as “HD-2D,” which takes the 2D pixel-based graphics style of the 16-bit era of video games and renders it in a high-definition, 3D diorama format.
It was thought that roughly 90% of the game was done at the time of announcement. There will be a release on February 24, 2023, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows platforms.
