Lockpicking Leveling Guide Classic: How to Level Lockpicking 1-300

World of Warcraft heroes charging into battle under a purple sky with fel-green beams

Update (October 2026): This 1–300 route, checked against Warcraft Tavern’s Classic lockpicking guide, still applies on WoW Classic Era realms. Classic Anniversary realms have moved on to The Burning Crusade, where Lockpicking goes to 350, so we added a note on the last 50 points. We also cover World of Warcraft: Forever, which launches November 4, 2026.

Lockpicking is a rogue-only skill in WoW Classic. It lets you open locked chests, boxes and doors without a key.

That is handy for extra loot, for some quests and for helping other players with their lockboxes.

How do you learn Lockpicking?

Rogues start Lockpicking through the class quest at level 16. During the quest you also get your Thieves’ Tools. You need to carry them with you to pick any lock.

Your maximum Lockpicking skill is your character level multiplied by five. At level 30, for example, your cap is 150. That means you need to be level 60 to reach 300.

The 1–300 route, step by step

At each stop, keep picking locks until they turn gray and stop giving skill points. Then move on to the next area in the table.

Four ways to level it faster

  • Pickpocket as you go. Use Pick Pocket on humanoids while you move between boxes. The junkboxes you collect give easy skill points.
  • Wear Dark Leather Gloves. They add 5 to your Lockpicking skill, which can let you start a new area a little early.
  • Stay safe. Use Distract and Sap to avoid fights while pickpocketing, and Vanish if you get caught.
  • Open boxes for other players. It is a good way to make friends, and many players will tip you.

Which Classic realms does this cover?

The route above is for the original Classic ruleset, which is what Classic Era realms run.

In early 2026, the Classic Anniversary realms moved on to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition. The pre-patch, the update that comes before the expansion, arrived on January 13. The expansion itself launched on February 5.

Blizzard offered free transfers from Anniversary realms to Classic Era realms until January 12, 2026. Characters that stayed on Anniversary realms continued into The Burning Crusade, where the level cap rises to 70.

Going from 300 to 350 in The Burning Crusade

On Burning Crusade realms, the cap is still five times your level, so it tops out at 350 at level 70. Follow the route above to 300, then head to Outland.

Warcraft Tavern’s TBC guide recommends the Wicker Chests in Feralfen Village, Zangarmarsh, which respawn fairly quickly. Pickpocketing humanoids for Strong Junkboxes also helps.

What about World of Warcraft: Forever?

Forever is a new version of WoW set on the original continents, before Molten Core, with adventures up to level 60. Blizzard has set its launch for November 4, 2026, and a beta has been running since September 17.

Forever adds new zones and changes some class mechanics. Warcraft Tavern’s Forever rogue guide says Lockpicking is largely the same as in the original game. Beta details can change, though, so check the route again after launch.
