The sequel to Kerbal Space Program was announced on August 19 at Gamescom 2019, with a release window of early 2020. Developer Star Theory Games (formerly known as Uber Entertainment) decided to rebrand Star Theory Games to emphasize its close ties to the Kerbal Space Program series. Shifting development to Star Theory freed up Squad to work on additional content patches for the base game.
The team consulted a panel of scientists and experts, including Dr. Uri Shumlak, associate chair of the Aeronautics and Astronautics department at the University of Washington, Dr. Joel Green, an astrophysicist and YouTuber who has made videos on the Kerbal Space Program, and Scott Manley, an astrophysicist and YouTuber who has made videos on Kerbal Space Program.
There have been complaints that the learning curve for Kerbal Space Program is excessively steep. As a result, the development team has announced that they want to increase the number of tutorials available to players in order to better assist them in learning the game’s features.
The Release Has Been Delayed Until The Third Quarter Of 2021 For Unknown Reasons.
It is unknown what Star Theory’s continued role is on the title as Take-Two has established a new unidentified company under Private Division to continue production of Kerbal Space Program 2.
Bloomberg’s follow-up reporting confirmed that Take-Two had been in acquisition talks with Star Theory before suddenly changing course, forming a new studio (Intercept Games), and hiring away one-third of Star Theory’s staff, including the studio’s creative director and lead producer. Three months later, Star Theory ceased operations. Squad, creators of the first Kerbal Space Program, have confirmed they will be working on the sequel.
The release date was pushed back again in November 2020, when creative director Nate Simpson said that it wouldn’t come out until 2022. The game’s official Twitter account revealed in June 2021 that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions would be released in 2022. A postponement to early 2023 was announced in May of 2022.
An early access date of February 24, 2023, was announced in October 2022. A future development roadmap was also revealed by Private Division and Intercept Games. The goal for Early Access is to have all the functionality and content of the original Kerbal Space Program, but with a better user experience, new parts, and improved tutorials. The game’s future plans include the implementation of science, colonies, interstellar travel, multiplayer, enhanced exploration, and resource collecting.
