Intel Optane P5810X SSDs Launched: The Optane SSD DC P5810X drives from Intel, which might be the company’s final storage system based on 3D XPoint memory, have quietly started shipping. At 100 disk writes per day, the new SSDs provide the highest performance and ultimate durability (DWPD).

They don’t differ significantly from the original Optane SSD DC P5800X-series models, though. What would you thus anticipate from the long-dead Optane division? The 400GB and 800GB variants of Intel’s Optane SSD DC P5810X series now use a 2.5-inch U.2 form factor and a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface.

The drives offer performance numbers of up to 5400 MBps (800GB SKU) or 6000 MBps (400GB SKU) sequential write speed as well as up to 7200 MBps sequential read speed (such speeds make these drives one of the best SSDs today). You may also check Soulstice Official PC Requirements.

The drives’ random read/write performance can reach 1.5M/1.38M IOPS at a five-second read/write latency. The key selling feature of these drives is, of course, their endurance rating of 100 DWPD, which is something that traditional 3D NAND-based solutions cannot give.

For this reason, Samsung and Kioxia have Z-NAND, but they still fall short of Intel’s Optane DC in terms of durability. Since the Optane SSD DC P5810X line from Intel is a member of the code-named Alder Stream family of drives, which also includes P5800X-series products, it makes sense to assume that the new products will utilize 3D XPoint memory technology and similar controllers.

The new P5810X drives have an active power rating that is significantly higher than that of their P5810X ancestors, which on the one hand means they can withstand high temperatures for extended periods (though they cannot go above 70°C), but on the other hand indicates their lower economic efficiency.

Why is Intel discontinuing Optane?

Based on the technology, Intel created a line of Optane SSDs and persistent memory DIMMs, which had some success in the data centre market but failed miserably in the consumer market, leading the company to stop production in January 2021. In 2021, Micron discontinued operations and sold its 3D XPoint manufacturing facility.

Is Intel Optane still supported?

Devices using Intel Optane Memory M10 Series and Optane Memory Series are not supported. Learn about the drivers and platforms that these devices support as they near their End of Life. The Pinning feature won’t be supported anymore.

Is Intel still making SSDs?

Intel announced that all Optane-only SSDs for the consumer market would be discontinued in January 2021.
