Update (October 2026): Liquipedia is still the go-to reference for Dota 2 esports. It also hosts the main Dota 2 game wiki, which moved there from Fandom in 2024. At The International 2026 in Shanghai, Team Spirit won a record third title, while Team Liquid went out in the lower bracket.

If you follow Dota 2 esports, you have almost certainly used Liquipedia. Here is a short history of the site, the team behind it and one of Team Liquid’s biggest Dota 2 moments.

What is Liquipedia?

Liquipedia is an online esports encyclopedia affiliated with Team Liquid. It covers tournament details and standings, player biographies and team rosters.

That coverage spans more than sixty games, including Dota 2, Counter-Strike and League of Legends.

From StarCraft builds to a Dota 2 wiki: a timeline

• 2000: Team Liquid is founded in the Netherlands.
• 2006: Liquipedia is founded, originally to help players with the best builds in StarCraft: Brood War.
• 2012: Team Liquid enters Dota 2 by acquiring a North American team.
• 2017: Team Liquid wins The International 2017.
• 2024: Liquipedia begins hosting the Dota 2 game wiki after its move from Fandom. It is the site’s first general gaming wiki beyond esports.

How Team Liquid won The International 2017

The International 2017 was held at the KeyArena in Seattle from August 7 to 12, 2017. Its prize pool of nearly $25 million was crowdfunded through the Dota 2 battle pass, a paid in-game pass.

Team Liquid fought its way through the lower bracket, the second-chance side of the playoffs, to reach the Grand Final. There it beat Newbee 3–0 in a best-of-five series.

The win earned the team nearly $11 million. LGD.Forever Young finished third.

The International 2026: a record for Spirit, an early exit for Liquid

The International 2026 marked the 15th anniversary of Dota 2’s world championship. Its main event ran from August 20 to 23 at the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, with a best-of-five Grand Final on the last day.

Team Liquid reached the eight-team main event after dropping only one series in the group stage, Valve noted.

Its run ended in the lower bracket quarterfinals, where Team Spirit swept Liquid, as GosuGamers reported.

Team Spirit went on to beat Team Vision 3–2 in the Grand Final on August 23, according to Valve’s official recap and GosuGamers. Spirit’s Yatoro and Collapse became three-time TI winners, the first players to reach that mark.

The prize pool was far smaller than in Liquid’s 2017 year. Spirit took home US$1.4 million from a pool of US$3.33 million.
