The Dutch formed their professional team Team Liquid in the year 2000. The team, which started as a Brood War clan, made the jump to StarCraft II during the SC2 Beta in 2010 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the best western squads. Team Dota 2 was officially unveiled on December 6, 2012. The squad finished in second place at The International 2019 after having won The International in 2017.
When people think of Team Liquid, they immediately think of TL.net, the organization’s official website. Since its inception on May 1, 2001, it has grown to become the largest StarCraft and Dota 2 resource online, attracting thousands of users and several professional players. Dota 2 coverage was added to Teamliquid.net on August 30th, 2012.
In addition to the TLPD, which is a database of professional gamers, this site also hosts the wiki for Brood War, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, Dota 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch, Liquipedia.
We’d like to apologise for the confusion around The International qualified teams caused by the standings on our Dota 2 wiki.

Dota 2 Liquipedia History
In 2017, Team Liquid would be expected to be among the favorites at The International. They would be given a Group A seed for the upcoming Stage 1, where they would compete against other heavy hitters like Evil Geniuses, LGD Gaming, and Team Secret. Team Liquid got out to a strong start in the Group Stage, and after a tight competition with LGD Gaming for first place, they eventually won the group with a 13-3 record.
This meant they got to choose either Virtus. pro or Invictus Gaming, the third and fourth-place teams from Group B, as their opponent in the Upper Bracket of the Main Event. Instead of facing the more aggressive Russian team, Team Liquid decided to play in their first match.
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for Team Liquid in the first set of the main event, as they were eliminated from further contention with a 1-2 loss to it. They would need to have a run like Digital Chaos had at The International 2016 in order to make it to the Grand Finals. They faced off against Team Secret in the opening round of the Lower Bracket and ended up dropping a game to them.
Team Liquid was on the brink of elimination with one game to go, but that wouldn’t be the last time they faced elimination throughout the tournament. Team Liquid reached the Lower Bracket final by defeating Team Empire, another unexpected candidate, as well as two other favorites, Virtus. pro and LGD Gaming.
There, they met another unexpected competitor, LGD. Forever Young. Only two of LFY’s Group B matches were lost, and up to the Grand Final versus Newbee, they had never lost a match on the main stage. After dropping the first game of the Lower Bracket final against LFY, Team Liquid found itself in a precarious position once again.
However, with the help of MinD ContRoL’s Nature’s Prophet, they were able to achieve victory once again, turning the series around. In the Grand Final, Team Liquid faced Newbee. Team Liquid had never lost a series to Newbee before, and that trend continued as they won the series 3-0. With their victory, they became the seventh team to win The International and the accompanying prize pool of almost $10 million USD.
This would be the first time a team consisting of players from five different countries won the Aegis, and the first time a 3-0 whitewash occurred in a TI Grand Final. As a member of the Invictus Gaming roster, Newbee’s Faith was also prevented from winning The International for a second time. The winner of TI has always alternated between Chinese and Western teams, and Liquid’s victory upheld that trend.
