The moon puzzle is hidden behind a door that has a strange symbol of eyes and stars above it. You can find this door in the Shattered Sanctum, the main building in the Goblin Camp.
To reach the door, you have two options:
- You can fight through the goblins and their allies, such as ogres, bugbears, and words. This will require a lot of combat skills and resources, but it will also give you a lot of loot and experience.
- You can sneak or talk your way through the goblins and their allies, using stealth, deception, persuasion, or intimidation. This will require a lot of charisma and luck, but it will also save you a lot of trouble and time.
Either way, you will eventually reach the door with the symbol above it. Behind this door is a small room with four circular plates on the floor. These plates have images of different phases of the moon on them: full moons, half-moons, and new moons. This is the moon puzzle that you need to solve.
How to Solve the Moon Puzzle?
Many role-playing game fans will guess correctly that positioning the circles so that the moon phases are in particular places is the key to solving this puzzle. To be precise, new moons must fall on the lit bottom circle, half moons to the left and right of that circle, and full moons on the top circle opposite the lit circle.

A notebook in the Desecrated Temple is meant to lead BG3 players in the proper direction when solving the moon puzzle. You may find the journal in a drawer next to your bed, and its contents include the directives “match the stars” and “darkness belongs at the bottom.”
The problem is complete except for the half moons on the left and right edges. Finally, gaining access to the Underdark is possible even if you never solve the moon riddle. A lockpick will reveal a lever on a neighboring wall that can unlock the door.
