Teen Says He Was Gaming When Woman Entered With Bat and Knife, Stabbing Him Near Canutillo

A 14-year-old El Paso boy told police he was sitting in his gaming chair playing video games when a woman walked into his room with a knife in one hand and a baseball bat in the other.

That woman, Janie Ann King, 44, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police took her into custody Sept. 2 after a standoff of more than four hours at a home on Nordstrom Avenue near Canutillo, in El Paso’s Upper Valley. Jail records cited by KTSM showed she was being held on a $100,000 bond.

What the boy and his brother told police

The account comes from a complaint affidavit reported by KFOX14, KTSM and the El Paso Times.

The boy told investigators he asked King to put the weapons down. Instead, he said, she began stabbing him. His right palm was cut when he tried to take the knife from her.

His brother was in his own bedroom on the first floor. He told investigators he heard slamming, running and screaming upstairs. Then he heard his brother yelling, “She’s trying to kill me,” and saw King chasing him down the stairs. He grabbed towels and pressed them on the wounds to try to stop the bleeding.

Medical staff told investigators the boy had two stab wounds to his neck, two to his right arm and one to his torso near his left armpit, the El Paso Times reported. Police said he was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. No update on his condition had been released as of Sept. 13.

Four hours in the garage

The call came in about 5:47 p.m., KVIA reported. When the first officer arrived, the boy’s brother let him inside. King was in the garage. The officer kept watch on the garage door so she couldn’t come back into the house, and he told everyone inside to get out.

Police said three other juveniles were in the home when officers got there. None of them were hurt.

King stayed in the garage for more than four hours. Around 10:20 p.m., SWAT officers went in and took her into custody.

What’s still unclear

Police haven’t said whether King and the boy are related. El Paso police spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros said he couldn’t disclose that because the boy is a victim, the El Paso Times reported. The affidavit doesn’t mention a motive either.

King’s bond hearing was set for Sept. 10. It was pushed to Sept. 15 after her public defender raised concerns about her mental health, according to the El Paso Times.

The charge against King is an allegation. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
