The game Assassin’s Creed Red is going to do something that Ubisoft has been promising us since 2007: let us explore Japan as an assassin. That’s what Project Red, Ubisoft Quebec’s next flagship open-world action RPG, promises.
This is the most interesting upcoming Assassin’s Creed game we’ve heard about so far, from Assassin’s Creed Hexe to Assassin’s Creed Infinity. AC Odyssey’s studio is working on a Feudal Japan scenario and “the biggest blockbuster for 2024.”
The production of Assassin’s Creed Red has become so large-scale that it has diverted resources from other projects, affecting other planned Ubisoft titles – Immortals Fenix Rising 2 has reportedly been shelved as a result. So, what’s the big deal about?
Below is what we know so far about Assassin’s Creed Red, which is anticipated to arrive sometime next year, following the October 5, 2023 release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Assassin’s Creed Red
Following the success of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in 2020, Ubisoft Quebec’s next major game in the franchise will be Assassin’s Creed Japan.
Assassin’s Creed Red details leaked & it apparently is coming next year…
We recently found out (via leaks) the game set in Feudal Japan reportedly will have dual protagonists.
A Female Samurai & African Refugee Shinobi. Some people were very upset by that revelation… https://t.co/19J4y5UE4v

Developer Marc-Alexis Cote, who has worked on some of the best Assassin’s Creed games as both creative director and producer, defined Codename Red as Ubisoft’s “next premium flagship title” before suggesting that it will be “the future of our open-world RPG games on Assassin’s Creed.”
Assassin’s Creed Red Development
Ubisoft Quebec is working on Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. The studio made its name by developing expansions for Assassin’s Creed 3 and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, and it impressed the powers that be enough to become the first studio outside of series creator Ubisoft Montreal to be given the reigns of a mainstream installment.
Ubisoft Quebec went on to lead the development of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in 2015 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in 2018. While we don’t know how long Assassin’s Creed Codename Red has been in development, we do know that Jonathan Dumont will return as creative director, a post he held on both AC Odyssey and Ubisoft Quebec’s Immortals Fenix Rising, which was released in 2020.

Assassin’s Creed Red leaks
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red has seen its fair share of leaks and rumors. The announcement of an Assassin’s Creed Japan game came in July 2022. Still, it was unclear if it would be a standalone experience or part of the larger Assassin’s Creed Infinity offering.
We now know that Assassin’s Creed Codename Red will be the series’ next major installment, despite the fact that it set the internet on fire at the moment. And with reason: it’s been a long time coming.
While Assassin’s Creed: Fragments, a series of YA novels, provided us with a peek into the lives of The Blade of Aizu (located in Japan), and there have been a few clues in the mainline games over the years, the setting has always been desired but never delivered.
Fortunately, in this case, the reports were genuine and who knows how long we’ll have to wait for more details. The most recent disclosures have come from an unnamed inside source, according to Insider Gaming.
If the rumors are correct, we will be able to pick between two playable characters in Codename Red: a Samurai and a Shinobi. We’re not sure if character selection will function like Odyssey and lock us in for the length of the game or if we’ll be allowed to swap mid-game.
The female Samurai character can be seen in the announcement trailer. At the same time, according to Insider Gaming, the as-yet-unseen Shinobi is “understood to be an African refugee who learned the way of the Creed.”
This leak appears to have been verified in some way by a LinkedIn leak from an Assassin’s Creed writer, who shared an image of a female warrior wielding a katana. It was also accompanied by a stylized logo for the next sequel. At the very least, it appears to be prototype branding that may alter the final product when the game is released in 2024.
Playing as Samurais and Shinobis, it stands to reason that an earlier leak from Insider Gaming revealed that Codename Red will emphasize stealth gameplay while also encouraging open-world map exploration and RPG gaming found in newer titles.
