Bethesda announced the game’s new release date of September 6 in a video posted on Wednesday. Previously, the game was expected to be released in the first half of this year. The Starfield Direct live stream on June 11 has been confirmed by the publisher as well.

Microsoft, the company that owns Bethesda, also confirmed that the Xbox Game Showcase will be held on Sunday, June 11th, before the Starfield presentation. This would make it take place on the weekend between Summer Game Fest 2023 and Electronic Entertainment Expo 2023.

“From myself and everybody here at Bethesda, we are so excited to finally tell you when Starfield is coming out this year,” said Todd Howard as part of an announcement video.

“We have poured ourselves into this game and even I’m surprised how much we can pour, it is large.”

During his talk, Howard also mentioned the upcoming Starfield Direct, which is set to take place in June, during the week that is commonly known as E3.

“But also this June we’re going to bring you into the studio, and give you a deep dive into the game at our Starfield Direct. There’s so much that we still have to show you.”

The first release date for Starfield was set for November 11, 2022. The game was originally scheduled for May of 2022 but was postponed to the first half of 2023. Shortly after Starfield’s initial delay in June of last year, Howard revealed the first 15 minutes of gameplay at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase.

Later that year, he explained to the Lex Fridman podcast that delaying Starfield was a difficult choice, “but it was the right thing to do,” and that Bethesda was collaborating with “the greatest engineers at Microsoft” to make the game shine on consoles.

As Microsoft owns Bethesda, the developer’s upcoming titles will not be available for PlayStation systems. From 2002’s The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind onward, the company has a history of producing Xbox-exclusive content, as Howard pointed out in the interview.

“Keep in mind that for us that exclusivity is not unique, even though we’ve done PlayStation stuff and I think the PS5 is just an insane machine – they’ve done a great job and we’ve had great success on PlayStation,” he said.
