Eric Lempel, a PlayStation senior official, justified the recent price rise for PlayStation Plus and explained why the firm does not distribute its titles on PlayStation Plus at launch.
This is in reference to Microsoft’s decision to put first-party games on Xbox Game Pass, their video game subscription service, on day one. Lempel was also questioned about the recent $40 hike in the PS Plus Premium/Deluxe tier fee.
Sony Justifies the PlayStation Plus Pricing Increase
Lempel’s rationale for the price increase began by telling Barron that the company had to review its pricing and respond to “market conditions.” He went on to say that the business wants to “make PlayStation Plus great.” With our revamp last year and the introduction of the tier system, many consumers saw that PlayStation 5 offers a lot of value.”

Lempel also stated that the firm had not raised prices for 85% of the world in “many years,” referring to the most recent PS Plus price rise in 2017.
Regarding Xbox Game Pass, Lempel stated that it all comes down to the service, type, and quality of games, and he chose not to comment further on “what the competition is doing.” He believes PlayStation is “offering a great curated catalog of games, as well as other features and services with PlayStation Plus.”
He believes it is a distinct offering from Game Pass and that it has “resonated with consumers.” In support of that position, Lempel stated that the business did not expect one-third of the PS Plus user base to choose the highest two tiers of the new PS Plus, but they did.
