Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 And Xbox Series X: A Case Of Too Little, Too Late?

Despite Red Dead Redemption 2’s massive popularity, many fans have long been upset by the game’s lack of a current-gen port. The release surprised fans with its bustling atmosphere and attention to detail, but it was constrained due to its 2018 release date, which came just before the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

With many fans believing that the game could reach even higher heights on current hardware, it’s easy to see why a current-gen port was requested.

With Xbox and PlayStation releasing their most recent systems in 2020, the game’s audience has been clamoring for current-gen ports of Red Dead Redemption 2 for nearly four years.

As there is still no confirmed news or tangible advances regarding Red Dead 2 ports, and with fan interest shifting elsewhere, it appears that Rockstar may have squandered a golden opportunity to provide fans with a current-gen experience.

Rockstar discreetly tweaked their Red Dead Redemption copy to add 60 frames per second toggle to the game on PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility.

Of course, the ideal moment to release Red Dead Redemption 2 for new consoles would have been when they were introduced in 2020, but Rockstar elected not to take advantage of the chance at the time.

Some high-profile leaks in May 2022 stated that such ports were in the works at Rockstar, while it was later alleged that work on a current-gen Red Dead 2 had been altogether canceled.

Many speculate that this is because Rockstar needs as many resources as possible for Grand Theft Auto 6, and it appears unlikely that work on RDR2 ports would continue at any point before GTA 6.

Aside from Rockstar’s need for resources elsewhere, the fact remains that there is less interest in Red Dead Redemption 2 ports these days.

While these versions might have sparked great interest a few years ago, many players have exhausted RDR2. They are now quite familiar with modern technology, removing the allure of a current-gen version of the game.

The recent controversy surrounding Red Dead Redemption’s Nintendo Switch release has made the probable reception of current-gen ports for RDR2 even worse.

This project was long expected to be a complete remake or remaster of the 2010 title for all platforms, with the comparatively disappointing reality of a simple port causing much discontent among the franchise’s fanbase.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out for five years, and news of current-gen ports for the game might easily fall flat like the Nintendo above Switch announcement. At this point, Rockstar would be better off waiting till Grand Theft Auto 6 has settled before starting work on a remake of the game for the next generation of consoles.

New ports for Red Dead Redemption 2 would have been tremendously well appreciated by large segments of the game’s fanbase at one point, but this time has clearly passed.

As the game matures alongside the current generation of consoles for which fans initially requested ports, it only makes sense for Rockstar to focus on larger-scale projects instead. While speculations about these ports continue to circulate, the final result would only pique the curiosity of a sizable percentage of RDR2’s fandom.
