Although Mario Kart 8 debuted on the Wii U a decade ago, development on the game continues to this day. There is currently a stream of downloadable content being released for the 2017 Switch version of the game, which adds not just new courses but also new drivers.
The latest version (which also included a Yoshi’s Island course) was released today, and we were happy to include Birdo (along with Yoshi’s Island) in it. However, a screenshot taken immediately after the update was installed reveals that there is still room for five more:
Extra five! Five unknown players in a well-known Nintendo title. What this says is not lost on any of you. This calls for wild guesses.

Unlike earlier entries, which preferred to stay inside the confines of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario Kart 8’s updates have gradually incorporated characters from other Nintendo franchises, like The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon. That’s right; in classic Smash Bros. fashion, these five characters may be from any part of the universe.
Possibly a new face, but one that everyone has been expecting. Samus is the natural fit, especially considering how awesome it would be to combine a car with her spacecraft (and a Metroid-themed course would also kick ass).
Perhaps a new angle will be taken on an established figure. There are already several Marios here; may a second Link please join them? It may be the Wind Waker Connection, right? So long as it passes the standards of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it’s good enough for Mario Kart 8.
Yet it might be someone else as well. After all, Nintendo has been around for a very long time. There’s something a little off about how Nintendo’s other racing game franchise, F-Zero, doesn’t have any representation in Mario Kart 8, which is also about racing vehicles. As an F-Zero track (and vehicle!) is already there, Captain Falcon would be a natural fit.
Perhaps some Pikmin would be nice right about now. Punch-Out? Is it too dated to make mention of Guns in 2023? Maybe some of Mario’s most well-known characters are getting the big-screen treatment, and that’s why there’s room for them.
Perhaps it’s time for you to take charge. Speculating about Nintendo is a lot of work.
