Mario Movie Mayhem: The Smash Bros. Fight to Remember

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become a retrospective of classic Mario games. The new trailer adds Super Smash Bros. to the list of games it alludes to, with Chris Pratt’s Mario and Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong duking it out on a 2D Final Destination-style stage.

Like Smash, when Mario is quickly defeated by his earliest adversary, he leaps into the air and grabs a power-up in the form of a catsuit that ultimately doesn’t help him much. In this parody, we hear Seth Rogen’s DK voice for the first time as he mocks Mario’s losing attempt and then pushes him off the stage in a nod to Smash.

These nods to Super Smash Bros. shouldn’t be surprising, given how heavily the film draws from Mario’s most successful offshoots.

Many characters have been seen racing across the screen in go-karts reminiscent of Mario Kart, and we’ve seen glimpses of Luigi (Charlie Day) battling ghosts as he could in Luigi’s Mansion.

Even with these hints, there will be many more easter eggs to find in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opens in cinemas on April 7.
