Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series and the founder of Tango Gameworks, recently explained why he decided to leave the studio he started. He wanted to leave much earlier than he did.
Mikami started Tango Gameworks, the studio behind The Evil Within games and Ghostwire: Tokyo, in 2010. However, he left last year.
In a recent interview, he revealed that he wanted to leave eight years earlier but stayed because he felt responsible for the projects already in progress at the studio. It seems he started thinking about leaving after The Evil Within was released.
Now, Mikami has started a new company called Kamuy. So why did he leave Tango Gameworks? He wanted to create a place where young game developers could gain more experience in the industry.
He believes in shorter development cycles between games, which means more games can be developed in less time. He also thinks there’s a demand for unique games on a smaller scale.
But that’s not all. Mikami also wants to move away from survival horror games. This is surprising because he’s had a lot of success with them in the past, with games like Resident Evil and The Evil Within. It seems we won’t be getting any more spooky games from him for a while. It’ll be interesting to see what he works on next.
