Minecraft is a cross-platform game, but only within the same edition. This means that you can play with your friends on different devices as long as you have the same edition of the game. If you have Minecraft: Java Edition, you can play with other Java Edition players on any computer.

If you have Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, you can play with other Bedrock Edition players on any device. You need to have a valid account and an internet connection and either join or create a server or a world.

Minecraft: Java Edition vs. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition

There are two main editions of Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Java Edition is the original version of the game, which runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Bedrock Edition is the newer version of the game, which runs on Windows 10 PCs, Xbox One and Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices.

The main difference between the two editions is that they are not compatible with each other. This means you can only play with players with the same edition as you. For example, if you have Java Edition, you can only play with other Java Edition players. If you have Bedrock Edition, you can only play with other Bedrock Edition players.

How Do You Play Cross-platform in Minecraft: Java Edition?

If you have Minecraft: Java Edition, you can play with other Java Edition players on any computer, regardless of the operating system. However, you need to have a valid Minecraft account and an internet connection. You also need to either join or create a server, which is a virtual world where multiple players can interact.

There are two types of servers in Minecraft: Java Edition: official servers and private servers. Official servers are hosted by Mojang, the developer of the game, and are free to join. Players or third-party providers host private servers and may require a fee or an invitation to join.

To join or create a server in Minecraft: Java Edition, you need to follow these steps:

  • Launch the game and select Multiplayer from the main menu.
  • Choose whether you want to join a server or create a server.
  • If you’re going to join a service, Add a Server and enter the server address and name.
  • You can find server addresses and names on various websites. Alternatively, you can select a server from the list of Featured Servers or your Recent Servers.
  • If you want to create a server, you need to either download and run the server software from the official website or use a third-party hosting service. You also need to configure the server settings, such as the game mode, the difficulty, the allowlist, and the port forwarding.
  • Once you are on the Server, you can invite or join other players by using the chat or the command /invite. You can also use the voice chat or the text chat to communicate with other players.

How Do You Play Cross-platform in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition?

If you have Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, you can play with other Bedrock Edition players on any device, regardless of the platform. However, you need to have a valid Microsoft account and an internet connection. You also need to either join or create a world, which is a virtual world where multiple players can interact.

There are two types of worlds in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition: online worlds and offline worlds. Microsoft or third-party providers host online worlds that are accessible to other players. Your device hosts offline worlds that are only accessible to you.

To join or create a world in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, you need to follow these steps:

  • Launch the game and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  • Choose whether you want to join a world or create a world.
  • If you want to join a world, select Play and choose the world you want to enter from the list of available planets. You can also filter the list by Friends, Featured Servers, or Realms. Alternatively, you can select the Friends tab and choose the friend you want to join from the list of online friends.
  • If you want to create a world, select Play and choose Create New. You can also choose to make a Realm, which is a subscription-based service that lets you create and manage your online world. You can find more information on how to create a Realm on the official website.
Once you are in the world, you can invite or join other players by using the Invite to Game button on the pause menu. You can also use the voice chat or the text chat to communicate with other players.
