While the video was quickly removed, it was enough to spark excitement among GTA fans and gamers who had been waiting for a decade. Although Rockstar has officially announced that GTA 6 is in the works, there has been no word on a release date.
Is GTA 6 Game Coming to Netflix?
A new Grand Theft Auto game could be on the way, and no, we’re not talking about GTA 6. Instead, it appears like Netflix wants a piece of the GTA pie and is attempting to get a Grand Theft Auto game of some form onto their Netflix Games service.
This is according to a story published today in the Wall Street Journal about the company’s continuous efforts to capitalize on its library of original IP in the gaming market after acquiring a number of game development firms.
According to the article, the business has “discussed plans” to offer a Grand Theft Auto game on its service via a licensing agreement with publisher Take-Two Interactive.
It’s unclear what kind of game it would be or who would create it.
Any GTA Sequel Would Almost Certainly Be a Mobile Game
As things currently stand, any GTA spin-off that ends up on Netflix would undoubtedly be a mobile game, as the only way to play Netflix’s portfolio is via its mobile app. According to the source, Netflix intends to expand its library someday to include games that can be streamed from a TV or a computer.
According to one analyst who spoke to the WSJ, Netflix has spent approximately $1 billion on gaming thus far. It also appears to be looking to hire more gaming executives to supervise a move into AAA titles.
However, there is currently no reliable way to determine how well that investment is paying off for the corporation or whether it ever will. Instead of being purchased separately, the games are linked to Netflix memberships, which will be updated during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday. However, there is no way of knowing whether the games are convincing people to subscribe.
They don’t appear to be a particularly significant pull for existing members, however. These games had been downloaded 70.5 million times as of September 20. That may sound like a lot, but it pales in comparison to some of the gigantic amounts generated by the world’s most popular mobile games.
Honkai: Star Rail, for example, received over 20 million downloads on its first day of release earlier this year. And, according to Apptopia, less than 1% of Netflix customers play its games on a daily basis, which is somewhat unsurprising considering that much of its portfolio, including its most prestigious titles such as Oxenfree, Immortality, Spiritfarer, and others, is available elsewhere.
We already discussed Netflix’s significant video game push earlier this year, but it appears that the landscape hasn’t changed much since then. While a major Grand Theft Auto release could theoretically shift the tide, it’s also feasible that an impending Grand Theft Auto 6 release elsewhere will vastly overwhelm anything Netflix comes up with rather than seamlessly tie into it.
