This week’s new modification to the game caught the GTA Online players off guard. When you consider that GTA Online has been operating for ten years, it’s astonishing that it’s one of the most popular games out there.
The game has survived successive console generations since its first release in 2013 as part of Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox 360 and PS3. It was released on PC in 2015 after being converted to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014.
As evidenced by the brand-new San Andreas Mercenaries update released earlier this week, it transitioned to Xbox Series X|S and PS5 in 2022 and is still receiving significant improvements.
With that said a significant change occurred this week. Players were allowed to import their characters and progress from the last-gen edition of GTA Online when it launched for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 last year.
If your buddies didn’t upgrade or you still wanted to play the last-gen version concurrently, you would have to start over because it would also wipe your last-gen character.
Because of this, some players decided to forego the transfer altogether, however, circumstances have since altered. The most recent game update allows GTA Online players to migrate from last-gen without wiping their characters.

Sadly, this cannot be undone, so individuals who previously had their last-gen characters deleted will still be stuck with them. Players have expressed their displeasure about this, believing that Rockstar should have permitted this to occur sooner.

In the latest GTA Online update, Rockstar have made it so migration to current gen won’t delete old gen progress, a year after release.

Why Rockstar decided to or was able to make this choice is not entirely obvious. This is only conjecture, but it’s conceivable that this is being done to encourage players to upgrade. The last-gen version will likely continue to receive support for a while, although the current-gen version already has some exclusive content.
