Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008, but that hasn’t stopped them from providing minimal support for it well into the second decade. On Thursday, the firm issued an update for the Steam edition.
As we have seen in the past, some players were concerned that this update would remove in-game music. On the other hand, Rockstar occasionally releases security-focused updates for their older games, so this patch likely is what we see here. It’s not a massive download at 158 MB.

We have been monitoring Rockstar’s progress on the patch via SteamDB for weeks and months now. This proved that Rockstar Games had been working on this patch for quite some time. Some of the builds uploaded to Steam’s server backend are displayed in the image below.

Security Speculation
Rockstar Games took down the multiplayer components of Grand Theft Auto IV not long after the game’s March 2020 release on Steam and their launcher. Given the lack of functional multiplayer features, this “security patch” is certainly intriguing.
Some have hypothesized that Rockstar released this patch in response to the 2022 security breach that exposed GTA 6 gameplay. However, the conclusion that this fix is connected to the code leak in that hack is based on conjecture and not evidence.
To the best of the community’s knowledge, Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition has not undergone any significant changes since the last time this article was published.
This article will be revised to reflect any substantial changes to the game beyond those required for maintaining server security. Given GTA 5’s age (now nine years), and the fact that it still receives substantial content updates, the discussion of an update for GTA 4 seems out of place.
