During his 20-year tenure at Epic, which came to an end in 2012, one year after Gear of War 3 was released and two years before Microsoft purchased the IP, Bleszinski was the lead designer on the first three games in the Gear of War series. During that time, Bleszinski worked at Epic.

When the purchase was announced in 2014, Xbox stated that Gears of War had generated more than one billion dollars in revenue and had sold more than 22 million games.

Following the loss of numerous key team members, Bleszinski told IGN that he believes Epic has run out of ideas for where to take the Gears franchise next. This is despite the popularity of the game.

“I honestly think that once Lee Perry [Gameplay Designer, Gears of War 2], myself, and Rod Ferguson [Producer, Gears of War] left, I believe that Epic didn’t really know what to do with the property,” he added. “It’s been a long time since I’ve worked on a Gears of War game.”

They hadn’t released a new game in quite some time. They were expanding, and they presumably needed the cash, even if they really didn’t know what to do with the future of the franchise, even though the [Unreal] engine was performing quite well.

Gears of War 4 was released in 2016, and Gears 5 will be released in 2019. Both of these mainstream series entries were developed by The Coalition. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the turn-based tactics spin-off Gears Tactics have both been produced since Microsoft’s acquisition of the franchise.

The Coalition stated in May 2021 that it was preparing to transition to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5, but that it did not intend to announce any new games in the near future. This announcement was made despite the fact that The Coalition had previously stated that it was planning to announce new games in the near future.
