Incredibly, a skilled artist used Far Cry 5’s map editor to recreate a scene from Starfield’s gameplay reveal. Far Cry games have had map editors for a long time, giving players an almost infinite sandbox to create whatever experience they can imagine.
The first new intellectual property from Bethesda Game Studios in over a decade was initially shown off to the public at last year’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. The presentation lasted an hour and a half, and 15 minutes were devoted to Starfield.
Everything about the player’s spaceship and customizable seemed pretty fascinating. Still, the game’s somewhat erratic frame rate and less-than-ideal combat prompted more worries than it addressed, especially considering it came so soon after a delay.
Even seven months later, this is still the only footage of Starfield that fans of open-world games have to examine. But it hasn’t prevented gamers from letting their imaginations go wild. Mojo Swoptops, a popular YouTube channel, has spent years using the game’s map editor to create hybrids of virtual and physical worlds, the most current of which is Starfield.
The Scottish artist painstakingly recreated the opening few minutes of gameplay from the reveal, creating a sequence that could never be traced back to Far Cry 5.
The Starfield universe’s moon Kreet serves as the scene’s opening backdrop, with the POV character stepping off the spacecraft and onto the planet’s surface.
Whereas in the original, the player is accompanied by a robotic companion, in this reproduction, not only is the player alone, but also the vehicle’s design has been drastically altered, and there is no HUD to be found.
When Inon Zur’s excellent score—which recalls the best of 1980s science fiction—accompanies the camera work, the differences become less noticeable.
The Far Cry map does a great job of depicting the craggy landscape of Kreet, and the whole thing plays like a lunar nature documentary. Starfield’s Research Lab plays a significant role in the game, as the camera focuses on a convincing replica of an alien species before panning around a corner.
The Mojo Swoptops video cut off there. Starfield is rumored to be getting a new release date shortly, despite rumors that it isn’t quite ready for prime time. Starfield will be available for PC and Xbox Series S in H1 2023.
