Bethesda To Release Largest Starfield Update Yet

Starfield, Bethesda’s massive 1,000-planet-wide space RPG, will be released on September 6, 2023. After years of anticipation, the game has had a relatively rough first year. Having said that, Bethesda has promised new features, important bug fixes, and more in 2024, and it’s allowing Steam users to beta test those new features and upgrades, with the first update arriving on January 17, 2024.

Bethesda Claims More Than ‘100 Fixes And Enhancements’

Bethesda said in a post to X (previously Twitter) that the full set of improvements would be available to all players on all platforms around January 31.

But if you’re in the Steam beta channel, here’s what you can expect on January 17:

  • Fixes to the “Eye of the Storm” quest that prevented the story from advancing
  • Temples in “Into the Unknown” should appear correctly
  • Additional widescreen support
  • Improved textures, lighting, and shadows
  • Fixes for planet ring shadows and other visual space phenomena
  • A fix to address asteroids getting stuck on ships
  • Ship hatches stubbornly inaccessible

While next week’s beta will not include any fresh new features, such as the “new ways of traveling” hinted at by Bethesda in previous weeks, improvements to quests that constantly get stuck are among the most welcome additions this time around.

Bethesda originally stated that upgrades would be released every six weeks beginning in February. City maps, additional ship customization, and building choices are among the things that are expected. Starfield will also get some story DLC in the form of “Shattered Space.” There isn’t much information available regarding this expansion, but it’s slated to arrive in the first half of 2024.
