Ensemble Studios created and Microsoft released Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, a real-time strategy computer game. It’s the follow-up to the first Age of Empires game, which came out in 1999 for PCs and Macs.
The Age of Kings is a medieval RTS with 13 different civilizations. Players must first amass sufficient resources to construct settlements, raise armies, and ultimately triumph over the game’s antagonists.
Five campaigns based on real-world events put players in unique situations with a compelling narrative arc, three other single-player game modes, and a multiplayer mode. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome was released in 1998 instead of 1997 despite employing the same game engine and code similar to its predecessor, The Age of Kings.
When developing Age of Empires, the design team prioritized fixing significant difficulties, but they admitted that several were still present upon the game’s release. There was overwhelmingly positive feedback for Age of Empires II.
The vast array of new features and the enhanced gameplay were both lauded. According to Metacritic, a website that compiles reviews of video games, the game was met with “universal acclaim.”
Age of Empires II was so successful that it had already delivered two million copies three months after its release and was number one on the charts in seven different nations.
The game received numerous accolades and is now regarded as a timeless masterpiece because of its profound impact on the video gaming industry. Age of Empires II: The Gold Edition is a compilation of the original game plus its 2000 expansion, The Conquerors. Numerous gamers rank Age of Empires II among the best games ever created.
Age of Empires II: HD Edition, with its enhanced high-definition visuals, was released in 2013. New missions, civilizations, and high-definition visuals are all part of the HD Edition, which also contains the base game and the expansion of The Conquerors. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, a remaster, came out in November this year.
