Last week, Embracer Group said they were selling Gearbox Software to Take-Two, the company behind Grand Theft Auto, for $460 million. After the sale, some Gearbox employees shared on social media that they lost their jobs. Now, Gearbox has confirmed this news.
In a statement to Eurogamer, Gearbox said they let go of some employees, but these people weren’t working on the new games Gearbox is making. Gearbox has six games in progress, including a new Borderlands game.
Along with countless others, I’ve just been informed I’ve been laid off at Gearbox. It really was a dream come true working on this team, and I’m incredibly grateful for my time here.
I’ll be making another pinned post that I’m ✨️ looking for work ✨️

Gearbox thanked everyone for their interest in their work, but they didn’t say how many people lost their jobs. Some employees, like Gearbox PR manager Jennifer Locke, mentioned on social media that they were leaving the company.
Embracer sold Gearbox, which they bought for $1.3 billion in 2021 because they’re trying to save money. They had a deal with Savvy Games Group backed by Saudi Arabia for $2 billion, but it didn’t work out last year. So Embracer is selling some studios, closing others, and letting go of employees to recover from this loss.
