Microsoft has signed a binding agreement with Sony to keep the popular video game series “Call of Duty” on PlayStation following the tech giant’s acquisition of the video game maker Activision Blizzard. The announcement was made on Sunday, July 16, 2023, in a Twitter post by Phil Spencer, who heads up Microsoft’s Xbox.

“We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games,” Spencer tweeted.

The agreement addresses the concerns of regulators, platform and game developers, and consumers who feared that Microsoft’s $69 billion takeover of Activision Blizzard would hurt competition and reduce the game’s availability on rival platforms.

Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, also expressed his commitment to resolving these concerns in a tweet: “From Day One of this acquisition, we’ve been committed to addressing the concerns of regulators, platform and game developers, and consumers. Even after we cross the finish line for this deal’s approval, we will remain focused on ensuring that Call of Duty remains available on more platforms and for more consumers than ever before.”

According to a report by The Verge, the commitment has led to a 10-year deal between Microsoft and Sony. PlayStation users can enjoy the Call of Duty franchise for at least a decade and other popular games from Activision Blizzard, such as Overwatch, Diablo, and World of Warcraft.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is one of the biggest deals in the gaming industry. It will give Microsoft access to the world’s most successful and profitable video game franchises and a huge library of content and talent. The deal is expected to close by July 18, 2023, subject to regulatory approvals.
