Wizards Of The Coast Cancels Five Unannounced Games As It Focuses On Developing ‘existing Brands’!

Wizards Of The Coast: Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro Inc. best known for its Dungeons & Dragons tabletop games, has canceled at least five video game projects as it lowers its industry aspirations.

Wizards of the Coast has “made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games which are strategically aligned with developing our existing brands and those which show promise in expanding or engaging our audience in new ways,” a spokesman said in a statement to Bloomberg, adding that the company is still “committed to using digital games.”

The spokesman said that less than 15 Wizards of the Coast employees would lose their employment due to the change, but they will be allowed to seek new positions within the organization. However, the restructuring will be complex for several independent studios, including Otherside Entertainment in Boston and Hidden Path Entertainment in Bellevue, Washington, both of whom were developing games for Wizards of the Coast.

The business, which also produces the well-known card game Magic: The Gathering, has invested heavily in video games over the past few years. It entered into agreements with numerous game developers and established at least six gaming studios, some of which were in Austin, Texas, and Montreal.

Players have responded favorably to early versions. The financial struggles at Hasbro, whose shares dropped 40% last year as increased prices resulted in reduced toy sales, have coincided with Wizards of the Coast’s development. In addition, two early-stage external games and an internal project with the codename Jabberwocky were canceled by the business.
