What Games Must You Play Before 2022? As the head of The A.V. Club’s gaming coverage, my favorite year-end tradition is sifting through the comments on our list (as well as the lower reaches of our various contributors’ ballots, i.e., the bits that didn’t make it into the top 100) to see what people had to say about their favorite games of 2022.
Nobody has the time to play every game, but I still believe in our top ten list because they are all excellent titles. Where does Norco fit in, for instance? The text-heavy journey through a parallel reality is presented in Geography Of Robots.
As a lover of the unusual, the beautiful, and the utterly ethereal, New Orleans is something I would enjoy. But alas, it eluded me this time around.
Also, our regular freelancer Alexander Chatziioannou has been raving about the more medieval Roadwarden since it came out a few weeks ago. Still, I haven’t had a chance to sit down and give it my full attention.
After all, one of the best parts of lists like ours is that, although they provide a picture of the last year in gaming, they also offer plenty of blanks in which discoveries can be made. Knowing that there is a fantastic game out there that I haven’t had the chance to play is the best feeling in the world.
2022 introduced us to an impressive lineup of diverse and entertaining games. As the year comes to a close, some of our developers are looking back on their favorites.

For instance, I’ve been considering purchasing Square and Artdink’s Triangle Strategy for a while due to my interest in tactical battles and decisions with significant repercussions. At least for the next two weeks, I can indulge my penchant for tactical role-playing games.
Signal! I can’t leave the year 2022 without giving rose-retro engine’s take on survival horror games a shot. I need something spacey and horrific to get the sour taste of The Callisto Protocol out of my mouth. (I’ve been keeping an eye on you, Scorn.)
We’re ecstatic that The Last of Us Part I has earned multiple wins in PlayStation Blog’s 2022 Game of the Year Awards, taking home the Gold for Best Story and Best Accessibility Features, and Silver for Best Soundtrack!

And that’s not even counting the year’s worth of games I enjoyed but didn’t get around to finishing: For example, Tunic was a fantastic game that kept me entertained for hours as I tried to comprehend its puzzles and the intricacies of its made-up language while yet feeling like they were fair.
But I never put the finishing touches on it all. I feel like Burgess Meredith in the video game adaptation of The Twilight Zone: fully confident that the timing is finally right. (I’m not blind to the irony/arrogance of penning these lines as a winter storm bearing down on Portland threatens to cut out my power entirely.)

It’s only normal to be frustrated by one’s lack of progress through a backlog of games. No other pop-culture-related pastime requires as much effort and dedication as this one.
(A terrible movie can waste someone’s time for up to three hours, a lousy T.V. show for up to ten or twelve, and God alone knows how many hours of my life I’ve wasted on a bad video game.)

But that’s the beauty of investing in a creative field where there’s always something new to discover. That’s why I appreciate every “How the hell did you forget XXXX?” remark that greeted our list: I am interested in learning about games about which other people are enthusiastic so that I may experience some of that enthusiasm for myself.
Perhaps something genuinely great came out even as I was writing this but didn’t make it into the discussion of our best-of list. I can’t wait to go in search of it.
