Since its open beta on July 26, Warner Bros. Games has seen more than 20 million players join MultiVersus, a free-to-play platform fighter.
The first season of MultiVersus began on August 15, and along with it came a brand new Battle Pass that players could use to earn in-game rewards. MultiVersus, created by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Games, will receive a plethora of new characters, modes, and content in its first season.
“Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was a major factor in our successful first half of the year. In an interview with GamesBeat, David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said, “And we’re so excited to get off to such a great start in the second half with MultiVersus.”
We couldn’t have done it without our MVPs! A huge thank you to our 20 million players. https://t.co/zhdIOjD2hk

Warner Bros. Games’ Multiversus Reaches 20 Million In A Month
MultiVersus is a huge milestone for us because it marks our entry into the free-to-play, high-definition gaming category, where we believe we can make a significant impact by combining a variety of our intellectual property (IP) into a single game and developing it from the ground up to work with live services and cross-platform play. We’re ecstatic to see such a massive response from the fans, as indicated by the 20 million views.
On August 23, Morty Smith (Rick and Morty) will join the cast, and many more heroes and personalities, including Black Adam (DC), Stripe (Gremlins), and Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty), will be added to the following months.
Along with the new characters and maps, Season 1 will also introduce new game modes such as Classic Arcade and Ranked. With full cross-play support and dedicated server-based rollback net code, the MultiVersus Open Beta is now available for free download on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
In this game, teams of two compete against one another. The roster of playable characters includes such luminaries as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, and Tasmanian Devil a.k.a.
Taz from Looney Tunes, Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, Tom and Jerry from Tom and Jerry, Jake the Dog and Finn the Human from Adventure Time, Steven Universe and Garnet from Steven Universe, Iron Gi Haddad replied, “These live game services at scale provide us with so much insight and so much information,” when asked why people are participating in the game.
Personally, I’m most pleased by how much time people are devoted to playing the game. Relationships are flourishing and multiplying at a rapid rate. It must hold the reader’s interest. And you need to design it so that people keep coming back so that there’s a consistent flow of interaction.
Likewise, we couldn’t be happier with the fans’ reception. Also, it’s common knowledge that this game was designed with spectatorship and online streaming in mind. Whether it’s the esports we helped launch or the streaming activity that got people excited about the game, we’re happy to see fans engaging with so many different aspects of our intellectual property.
Up to this point, 18 playable characters have been revealed for the game, and a further 3 have been announced. Given that the characters come from nine different series, I can’t help but compare it to a metaverse, where the combination of disparate intellectual properties is something players look forward to.
Since Player First Games’ game took that long to create, its inception and development occurred during COVID. Considering the other games, like Warner Bros.’ Hogwarts Legacy, have been delayed due to the pandemic, that’s quite an achievement.
Even though some players may have viewed the title as derivative compared to the Nintendo game, Haddad was pleased that the game resonated with fans in the same way that Nintendo‘s Super Smash Bros. franchise has. This game is unique in that it was developed with the freemium business model in mind.

Although there are in-game purchases available, they are completely optional and will not affect your chances of winning. Characters, character customizations (skins), a slew of esoteric cosmetics, and the founder’s packs are all part of the store’s roster of downloadable content.
Our extensive library of characters, stories, and worlds give us a wealth of intellectual property, as Haddad put it. This sets us apart from the competition, and we’re proud of it.
As the metaverse is envisioned as a combination of many different elements, I wondered if this was a good sign.
Near-term, “the way I’m thinking about that word is a community of players that are attached to computing power at a screen, and are a community that comes together, ideally on a daily active habit basis, and having something for them to engage in, around interactive play,” Haddad said. It’s at scale for us in such a short time, as the 20 million figure demonstrates.
To be sure, you can’t just hand out the glyphs and expect people to use them. You need to give them a game they’ll enjoy playing, and Haddad assured them that their game runs smoothly on a variety of platforms and looks great in high definition.
Haddad explained that they prioritized “character voices, moods, and how to make sure that it actually was advancing the genre.”
Game of Thrones: Conquest, a mobile game released by Warner Bros. in 2017, has been a huge success in terms of both free-to-play games and live operations. Sales of this game are about to top $1 billion. According to Haddad, this allowed the company to develop “muscle” in the free-to-play market.
There was a lot of brawn involved with live events and tournaments, as well as the merchandising that supports them. Haddad remarked, “This is the most significant step we have taken in the live service operations, and we are drawing from all over our portfolio to do it. But we anticipate more of the same in the future.
Traditional premium games like Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, according to Haddad, have been successful for the company. The game’s success can be attributed in large part to the fact that it was available on so many different platforms, which was measured by the company.
Even though Back for Blood wasn’t a massive hit, it has received regular content and downloadable content drops (DLC), and according to Haddad, the company plans to continue supporting the game with additional updates.
On Tuesday, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event, we should learn more about upcoming titles like Gotham Knights, which will launch in late October, and Hogwarts Legacy, which will launch on February 10.
Haddad remarked that he was pleased with the teams’ efforts and that their success indicated that the gaming industry was still a good one for a multimedia conglomerate to operate in. For those wondering, yes, Warner Bros. is now a division of Discovery.
“We’re leaning into where we think the growth opportunities are, servicing our franchises,” he said, referring to the company’s success in attracting and retaining customers. As the creators put it, “The fans just find a whole new way to engage with some of our biggest worlds, stories, and characters. We’re thrilled to share this success story because we believe this to be an integral part of our newly formed diversified media company.
