Visage Gameplay: Visage, developed and published by SadSquare Studio, is a psychological horror video game set to release in 2020. Players take control of Dwayne Anderson as he investigates the tragic past of a peculiarly designed mansion and its former residents. The majority of the home can be explored in the game, although unlocking certain rooms will require keys. Players will need to keep their sanity by avoiding the dark, but there are gadgets available to help them.
The game conducted successful Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight campaigns, which were mostly motivated by the Silent Hills playable teaser. Many other horror video games were identified as influences, and many of these games were also compared to Visage. Later, on October 30, 2020, it was made available for PC users, and in 2021, it hit consoles. While the game was praised for its psychological impact, audiovisual design, and suspenseful atmosphere, it was panned for its limited resources, clumsy gameplay, and glitches.
The scariest game of 2020 is coming back with an Enhanced Edition for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X & S.

Visage Gameplay
The gameplay and atmosphere of Visage are reminiscent of P.T. The first-person action takes place in an expansive 1980s suburban mansion. Dwayne Anderson, a resident of the house who killed his family and then himself, is the protagonist. Dwayne is being tortured by ghosts or other supernatural beings while he is stuck inside the mansion. The goal of the game is to escape the haunted mansion and discover the origin of the eerie happenings.
The house is laid out in a semi-open fashion, allowing the player unrestricted access to huge swaths at all times and providing several routes to any given location. A key to each locked door must be found before players may proceed with their exploration of the map. There are many threats the player must overcome as they venture on. To begin with, they need to keep their sanity by staying out of the shadows. Like in games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dwayne’s sanity decreases as he spends more time in the dark.
Second, when the player investigates the house, the ghosts will cause supernatural occurrences. The shattering of light bulbs, the slamming or opening of doors, and the malfunctioning of technological gadgets are all examples. Dwayne’s sanity will decline as a result of seeing these things.
Finally, Dwayne has to escape getting captured by the spirits and demons that reside in the house. Players must cautiously navigate the house, avoiding these ghosts and demons at all costs, or face an instant death ending. As Dwayne’s sanity decreases, supernatural occurrences get increasingly terrifying, eventually culminating in a ghost or demon attacking the player.
Players can defend themselves from these foes by using items like lighters, medications, light bulbs, and candles. Lighters allow the player to see in the dark, pills restore sanity, light bulbs fix damaged lights, and candles provide illumination that ghosts can’t dim or extinguish. The player can also find and utilize a camera and a sledgehammer, among other things.
Dwayne can only carry seven and keep five of these things in his inventory at any given moment. Therefore, the player must cautiously investigate the residence to get to the bottom of things.
The fourth chapter of the game is split into seven parts, and in each part, players must locate VHS recordings that are hidden throughout the house and are labeled with negative emotions, such as pride, negligence, indifference, prison, addiction, greed, and affliction.
Visage Development
In January 2015, work began on what would eventually become Visage, and by September of that year, it was officially announced. A Kickstarter effort that ran from January to March 2016 successfully funded the game. The target was $35,000 Canadian Dollars. Launched in October 2015, the Steam Greenlight campaign featured an in-page trailer.
The studio behind the game, SadSquare Studio, told IGN that “the eerie” will play a major role in establishing tension and anxiety among players. Jonathan Vallieres, the game’s visuals designer, has said that the cancellation of the Silent Hills project served as inspiration for the game. Some other films that have served as inspirations include The Conjuring, Insidious, Sinister, Ju-on, Ring, Kairo, and Phantasmagoria.
