A fullscreen pop-up ad that emerged in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey this week has been blamed on a “technical error” by Ubisoft. According to Reddit users, the ad appears only when you browse the map screen on the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game.
“This is disgusting to experience while playing,” one Reddit user said, encapsulating the usual reaction to such pop-ups in the middle of games.
“We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday,” Ubisoft spokesman Fabien Darrigues tells The Verge in a statement. “This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we learned of the issue.”
While it was first unclear why the game began presenting Black Friday pop-up adverts promoting Ubisoft’s latest editions of Assassin’s Creed, the publisher eventually clarified what went wrong in a post on X (previously Twitter).
We have been made aware that some players encountered a pop-up message in-game while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday. This was the result of a technical error that has now been fixed.

According to Ubisoft, it attempted to include an ad for Assassin’s Creed Mirage in the main menu of previous Assassin’s Creed titles. A “technical error” led the advertising to appear on in-game menus instead. According to Ubisoft, the problem has already been resolved.
Microsoft has used fullscreen Xbox pop-up advertising to sell its games, which has irritated Xbox owners. Microsoft’s advertisements display only when you load up an Xbox, and not everyone appears to be receiving them.

The pop-ups from Microsoft and Ubisoft are still considerably different from the adverts we’re used to seeing on gaming consoles. We’ve seen games like Saints Row 2 featuring billboard commercials, as well as lots of in-game ads in EA Games titles from the mid-to-late 2000s.
Full-screen pop-up adverts in the middle of a game are pretty rare. Imagine a universe entire of fun you spent $70 for, only to have adverts interrupt your gaming. I honestly hope that Ubisoft’s “technical error” never becomes a reality in the game business.
