Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered opens with a content warning stating that the trilogy contains “offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices”.
The statement notes that these portrayals are “inexcusable” but have been maintained intact to acknowledge and learn from their “deeply harmful” presence.
The remark does not specify the exact components of the games it alludes to, but one plausible example may be found in Tomb Raider 3, according to fans, in which stereotyped South Pacific natives assault Lara Croft with bows and arrows.
“The games in this collection feature derogatory portrayals of people and civilizations based on racial and ethnic biases. These preconceptions are highly hurtful, and unacceptable, and do not reflect Crystal Dynamics’ principles.

“Rather than removing this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hopes that we may acknowledge its harmful impact and learn from it.”
Statements like these are still unusual in video games, but internet streaming providers have used them to indicate portions of older TV shows and films that are now commonly considered objectionable.
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Tomorrow, February 14th, is Lara’s birthday.
