The Last of Us Part 2: Naughty Dog’s next live-service game will be a multiplayer experience set in the world of The Last of Us called Factions. The standalone multiplayer title started out as a mode in The Last of Us 2, but the ambitious development team pushed it to become its own game.
The Last of Us 2: Factions will be one of the most prominent live-service releases for the PS5 generation, and the PlayStation is gradually expanding into developing more first-party multiplayer experiences.
But what, precisely, are “Factions” in The Last of Us 2? Is this an ambitious undertaking, and what can players anticipate from Naughty Dog’s take on multiplayer games?
If you have any concerns about Factions, our guide should be able to answer them. It covers the game’s history, various gameplay options, supported platforms, and more.

The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Release Date
There is currently no official release date for The Last of Us 2: Factions, however, it is expected to come out sometime in 2023.
Originally scheduled for 2020 alongside The Last of Us 2, the Factions feature was split off to become its own game mode due to its massive scale.
The development studio Naughty Dog has indicated that The Last of Us 2: Factions will receive more attention and information in 2023. Is it safe to assume that we may expect a release date for the same year? The future holds the only certainty.
The Last of Us Part 2: Plot, Cast, and Environment of Multiplayer Mode
Unlike the first game, The Last of Us 2: Factions is set in a new and different world and has an all-new group of characters. At Summer Games Fest 2022, where he also debuted the project’s initial concept art, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann confirmed this information.
The setting of The Last of Us 2: Factions was also established by the concept image. You might probably tell that Factions is set in San Francisco, or at least that some of it are, thanks to the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
During his talk at Summer Games Fest 2022, Druckmann also briefly discussed the project’s magnitude and scope. It’s as huge as, if not bigger than, any of our single-player games, he said. There’s a backstory to it. That narrative approach is original to this game.

The Last of Us Part 2: Will a Battle Royale Mode Be Included in the Online Multiplayer?
Despite the lack of an official word, it seems like the stand-alone Factions game will feature a battle royale mode. The artwork depicts a sandstorm that seems to be closing in, which may be a reference to the storm circle featured in many battle royale games.
Considering that survival was a part of the Factions mode in The Last of Us, Part 1, it wouldn’t be shocking if Naughty Dog completely reworked the mode’s mechanics for the upcoming Factions 2.
The Last of Us Part 2: Will We Have to Pay to Play Online?
The Last of Us Factions 2 may be a freemium game, but this is still unconfirmed. A job listing for a “Monetization/Economy designer” from earlier this year hinted at a freemium-style model focused on in-game microtransactions.
Truthfully, Factions 2 would make a lot of sense as a free-to-play title. Based on the success of The Last of Us, this may be a massive hit. Additionally, it has the potential to answer PlayStation’s need for a AAA free-to-play first-party product by providing a steady stream of income.

PlayStation’s Hermen Hulst suggested in an interview with Julien Chieze that the next PlayStation live-service titles could launch simultaneously for PC and PS5.
Based on the PC’s success with freemium and live-service products, Factions 2 has the potential to be even greater than the upcoming The Last of Us Part 1 remake.

Frequently asked questions
Does The Last of Us Part 2 have factions?
Lead game designer Emilia Schatz told USgamer in September 2019 that “we’re focusing on a single-player experience, therefore we’re only building a single-player game for this.” The game is The Last of Us: Part 2. This was a huge disappointment for people who enjoyed playing “Factions” in the first Last of Us Multiplayer.
Is there going to be a part 3 of Last of Us?
Is there any information leaking out about The Last of Us 3? Part II’s creative director, Neil Druckmann, announced in April 2021 that he had written a third game’s plot structure. The project is not currently being worked on, though.
Will The Last of Us Part 1 have factions?
Sony is making a push into live service games, but they may have made a mistake if they expected Factions in TLOU Part 1 to lead the charge without multiplayer.
