Time marches on in the new year, and our minds turn to Elder Scrolls 6. Is a large portion of your creativity going to have to go into those ideas? We have no doubt that the best fantasy minds at Bethesda are hard at work shaping the next Elder Scrolls adventure, but since its announcement in 2018, even the barest hints about the game’s design have been few. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of tiny birds chirping and knocking at our window.
We suspect that we will hear anything significant about Bethesda’s other major series until Starfield, the developer’s glitzy new space RPG is released this year. If you can’t wait, there’s plenty more Elder Scrolls material to explore in the meantime. Replay any Elder Scrolls game on Steam, including the several remastered versions of Skyrim and the original games (some of which are free). And Morrowind is always a good idea.
If you’re looking for a way to get your fill of Tamriel during the information winter of discontent, we’ll be here to help you sift through the rumors, interviews, and speculation to find any crumbs of truth about Elder Scrolls 6. Where in Tamriel shall we go on our next quest? When in the timeframe of The Elder Scrolls will this take place? Furthermore, the most pressing issue is when we can start playing it.

Here you will find information regarding our planned return to Tamriel as soon as it becomes available. Someday. While we wait, here is what little is known (and what we can only speculate about) about The Elder Scrolls 6.
When Will the Sixth Installment of the Elder Scrolls Be Available to Buy?
You shouldn’t bother holding your breath. It’s likely to happen this decade. Probably. Despite being delayed, Starfield is still expected to release in 2023, well ahead of the completion of Elder Scrolls 6.
Pre-production on Elder Scrolls 6 began in June 2022, according to Todd Howard. Hold tight, for this is going to be a protracted struggle. Developer Bethesda believes The Elder Scrolls 6 will be popular for as long as Skyrim was.
In a long video interview from November of 2022, Todd Howard discussed a wide range of issues, including Starfield, video game creative philosophy, NPC romance, and Elder Scrolls 6. Details on the Publication: Howard echoed previous comments on Bethesda’s development timeframes, saying, I wish it was soon. They need to leave, and so do we. Also, I wish they didn’t take so long, but alas, they do. If I could change the past, I wouldn’t have intended to wait this long.
Next, Howard reaffirmed the team’s devotion to the Elder Scrolls universe by saying that he has personally invested the most effort into creating in that setting. Howard has stated that efforts are being made to ensure that the next Elder Scrolls game has a similar lifespan as Skyrim due to the game’s enduring popularity.
It’s important to consider how long the next Elder Scrolls game will be played, Howard said. And that shifts your perspective on the architecture from the get-go. A focus on mods and their creators has also been stated as a design goal for Elder Scrolls 6.
If Elder Scrolls 6 was announced at E3, when would that be?
Despite Starfield (which is ahead of ES6 in Bethesda’s pipeline) still being developed, Todd Howard blessed and cursed us by revealing Elder Scrolls 6 at E3 2018. We have waited a long time for Elder Scrolls 6, so this year at E3 we are going to casually count the years that have passed without any new information.
At this year’s E3, Todd Howard told IGN, I think everyone should be very patient. Pete Hines, speaking about the upcoming event that is not E3, said, If you’re coming at me for details now and not years from now, I’m failing to properly manage your expectations.
Shortly after E3 2021, Todd Howard commented in an interview, It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in the design.
Not E3 2022: In an IGN interview Todd Howard expressed empathy for those of us who are staring out to sea and wondering when the Elder Scrolls will return from the war, saying that Bethesda games take a while, I wish they came out faster, I really do, we’re trying as hard as we can, but we want them to be as best they can be for everybody.
Where will you go in The Elder Scrolls 6?
Given the paucity of official material, fans of the Elder Scrolls series have been dissecting the 2018 teaser trailer in search of hints. When asked if there were any hints in the teaser, Todd Howard said, hints at where it’s situated.
The public has taken it and run with it. The setting of The Elder Scrolls 6 has been decided upon, and according to Todd Howard, the decision was made quite some time ago.
Exalted Rock
It’s not too farfetched of an assumption, and it’s the most widely-held theory right now. The original teaser trailer had a high-altitude setting and rock formations. High Rock is at your disposal. There’s still too much uncertainty there.
High Rock is already covered during the early games despite the fact that the TES landscape shifts significantly over time. Likewise, Skyrim, Morrowind, Cyrodiil, and Hammerfell have all experienced this.
The Starfield E3 2021 trailer may have hinted at Elder Scrolls, adding fuel to the fire of curiosity. When viewed from the inside of a spacecraft, a tiny scratch may look like a sketch of a continent.
In addition, it resembles Illiac Bay, which can be found between High Rock and Hammerfell in Tamriel. Small as it is, and possibly meaningless, the shape is nonetheless noticeable. Hammerfell has been mentioned, and Bethesda may have even hinted at it being a potential setting. Possibly a chain reaction of events has begun.
Hammerfell
The New Year’s post by Bethesda in 2020 added Hammerfell as a potential travel location. The phrase mapping the future in the released image has people wondering if it could be a clue about Elder Scrolls 6.
Specifically, many have focused on a candle put directly beneath the word Hammerfell in the blank section of the map to the west of Skyrim, believing that it provides a clue to the image’s meaning. The rocky, dry landscape seen in the first teaser trailer may be indicative of Hammerfell, where the Redguard people reside. This is because the Alik’r Desert in Hammerfell fits this description.
Elsweyr
Visiting Elsweyr is a remote possibility. First of all, it doesn’t appear that often, leaving plenty of opportunity for your own imagination. For another, it’s the original home of the Khajiit, and it could make sense to zero in on one of Skyrim’s most prominent ethnic groups. However, we find this unlikely given that Elsweyr was already explored in a 2019 Elder Scrolls Online expansion.
A Black Marsh or a Valenwood
You shouldn’t go to Black Marsh. It doesn’t resemble the teaser at all. We also find Valenwood highly improbable due to its familiarity with swampland. The teaser could have been deceiving on purpose.
Obviously, it’s possible that we’re returning to a previously explored area. The amount of unexplored land in Tamriel is decreasing as a result of The Elder Scrolls Online. That may encourage TES6 to take a risk and set sail for an unfamiliar continent, like Akavir, where it may meet some hospitable aliens like the Snow Demons of Kamal or the vampire-like snake-like Tsaesci.
Alternatively, it may prompt Bethesda to look back on an earlier province, such as High Rock (again, the most likely candidate).
Where is The Elder Scrolls 6 in its development cycle?
As Todd Howard stated in an interview conducted in June of 2021, it’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in the design. However, the technology is being evaluated: Will this support the features we intend to implement in that game? Every new game will have its own unique set of tools, therefore the Elder Scrolls 6 will have its own set of enhancements to the Creation Engine 2 for its own needs.
Previous to the release of The Elder Scrolls 6, Howard highlighted the development of the Bethesda Creation Engine. Howard speculated in 2016 that the necessary technology to create Bethesda’s vision for it wasn’t available at the time.
‘That seems like you don’t even have the technology—how long is that going to take?’ I could sit here and explain the game to you, he added, but you wouldn’t believe me. What we have in mind for that game is ambition, and realizing it will take a long time.
Todd Howard mentioned a huge engine rewrite for Starfield in a different interview. It’s evident that a lot of effort is being put up a front on the next generation of RPGs from Bethesda, including Elder Scrolls 6, which will almost probably benefit from the same new engine technology.
For fans to wait for Elder Scrolls 6, Todd Howard said in an interview with IGN just before E3 2019. It will have been almost a decade since the debut of Skyrim before the next single-player adventure in Tamriel is launched.
“Long eons will separate them. It’s there already. There are times when I think it’s beneficial to be absent. It helps people look at it with brand-new eyes, and I think that once they see the game and what we’re going for, they’ll have a better grasp on the chasm between the current state of the technology and where we want to take it.”
The fact that Howard’s team doesn’t want to be referred to as the Elder Fallout Guys is also delaying the release of TES6. Hines told GameSpot in 2017 that given the quality of this material, I think Todd and his team have earned the right to be able to say, We realize everybody really wants, but we as creative people want to be able to develop stuff that we’re really enthusiastic about. They wanted to have the freedom to choose what they worked on next, whether it was new IP or an expansion of already existing works.
The Elder Scrolls 6: When Can We Expect More Information?
This won’t happen until well until 2023, when Bethesda rolls out its next major title, Starfield. The Elder Scrolls 6 won’t enter full development until that project is done, so we can probably expect it to launch in the middle of the 2020s.
Bethesda is likely setting up TES6 for a similar sequence to how they revealed Oblivion, Fallout 4, and Skyrim before their launches in relatively near-complete states with relatively short waits leading up to their launches (Oblivion was scheduled for a November 2005 release; it was delayed to March 2006).
The next Elder Scrolls, Hines informed us in 2016, will not be teased along as a sign of quality and as a salve for the production team to construct the game properly rather than wasting resources for vertical slice demos. It’s possible that the brief glimpse of some mountains was the last we’d get of The Elder Scrolls 6 until a significant portion of the game was actually developed.
In an interview with FZ.se, Bethesda’s vice president of marketing Pete Hines addressed the question of why The Elder Scroll 6 was unveiled at E3 given we already know that Starfield will be released first.
Just recently, I’ve been talking with him and some of the other people on my team about the possibility of publishing a more detailed studio roadmap that explains, Yes, we’re making this game called Starfield, and here’s what it is, and yes, we’re going to make Elder Scrolls 6, but we have these other two games to develop and make first.
This is simply to provide people with a clearer picture of our current situation and future plans.
Are there plans to make The Elder Scrolls 6 an Xbox One exclusive?
We’ve all probably heard by now that Microsoft has acquired Bethesda. There will likely be no immediate drawbacks to this information for PC gamers. If previous releases are any indication, Microsoft will be more than willing to release Elder Scrolls 6 for PC, possibly even on Steam. A copy can be obtained, at worst, via the Windows 10 store, while PS5 owners will be out in the cold.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was already expected to have a sizable budget in order to become Bethesda’s next blockbuster role-playing game, but Microsoft’s backing certainly won’t hurt. The game is unlikely to be released for the PS5 when it launches, but it will be available through Game Pass on launch day. That’s a compelling argument in favor of joining.

The announcement of the Xbox One exclusive Elder Scrolls 6 coincides with Microsoft’s commemoration of the original Xbox’s 20th anniversary. Microsoft’s Xbox head Phil Spencer was rather oblique, adding If we’re going to be on Xbox, I’d like for us to be able to bring everything we’ve got. I suppose that’s the case whenever I consider Elder Scrolls 6. The information was obtained that The Elder Scrolls 6 will not be available for PlayStation.
Will add-ons work with The Elder Scrolls VI?
Modifying Bethesda role-playing video games is a staple of the personal computer gaming community. Something about a player community being allowed carte blanche to produce absolutely breathtaking creations restores faith in humanity. The Forgotten City, a whole game built on a Skyrim add-on, has already been released.
While the fallout from Bethesda’s shaky Creation Club launch is still being felt, it’s a safe bet that The Elder Scrolls 6 will support mods. Bethesda has promised that even their online game Fallout 76 can be customized in the future. The legacy of Thomas the Tank Engine, Destroyer of Worlds, will hopefully live on for a long time.
