Tchia: New Caledonia, Awaceb’s native country, and explain how its customs are informing every element of the experience we’re developing in the wake of the thrilling revelation that the game will be coming to PS4 and PS5 at launch.
New Caledonia is a small archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and my partner Thierry and I have been friends since we were kids. Together, we started the studio Awaceb. We were raised in New California, thus is tremendously diverse, and different cultures permeate our work. Even the name “Awaceb” is a slang expression of relief and contentment among locals.

Therefore, it was only natural that we include some of those values into our next game, Tchia, by drawing on that history and ethos.

Respecting Cultural Norms and Facilitating Their Dissemination
To that end, our primary goal in developing Tchia is to create an experience that is accessible to people of all backgrounds. To make something instructive or geared squarely at the locals would be to negate the point for us, thus the place, plot, and characters we are developing are all completely made up. Our cultural inspiration isn’t a limitation, but rather a source of incredible richness and a rock-solid foundation for the game, and this opens the door to the magical elements we’ve been wanting to incorporate all along.

We’re bringing our own aesthetic sensibilities to the table while also pulling from the local landscapes, flora and animals, cultures, music, languages, and folklore. Having members of the team from different parts of the world has also been quite helpful in making sure that our work can be appreciated by those who aren’t familiar with the country we’re doing it for.
The way Studio Ghibli depicts Japanese society in several of its films is a good analogy for how we approach things. These mythical realms are so fascinating because they are so authentically Japanese despite their fantastical elements.

Using the skills and knowledge of the neighborhood
The experience’s heart and soul needed to be firmly anchored in the local cultures, thus we worked closely with natives whenever feasible to achieve this goal. Talented native speakers of the target languages provide the voices of all characters.
We also record choirs and musicians from the Kanak people (the indigenous Melanesians of New Caledonia) to use in the game’s soundtrack, giving it a vitality I haven’t seen in video games very often.
The fact that it’s a video game is the most important.
It’s a bonus when your work has cultural significance, but we prioritize developing a fun and engaging game above everything else. The game of Tchia is both analogous and physical in nature. I set out with the goal of creating something that felt like opening a toy box and playing with my toys again.

Because of the importance of locomotion in games with substantial exploration, we worked to ensure that it was also a rewarding experience. You can scale walls and fly across the land. Tchia can use the springiness of a coconut tree, for example, to rocket herself through the air, and this is because all trees are physically realistic and climbable. In addition to normal leaping and landing, we also offer a tricks system that allows you to perform awesome flips and dives. And if you need to travel further, just hop in your boat and set sail!
