Steam PC Demo: It’s Black Friday, the day when everyone on Earth goes a little bit crazy and spends all their money on things they don’t need because they’re 5 percent cheaper than they were the day before. Even if the old moon was working just fine, Earth bought a brand new one this year since this one has Bluetooth. Now, let’s take our minds off of things by learning about 12 exciting new games.

As is customary during Indiegeddon, I am unable to attest to the quality of these games. For the most part, I’m motivated to write about them because they strike me as intriguing, thrilling, terrifying, or just plain bizarre. Even though most of these games are still under development, you can do a lot of good by adding them to your Steam wishlist.

Unless you’re that one person in the greys who feels compelled to inform the universe that he genuinely thinks they all look bad, there’s certain to be at least one game here that has you checking its release date and wishing it was sooner. You poor soul, we truly feel sorry for you. Sadness, in all honesty. Let’s get moving, everyone else!

Collapsing Frontier

Each time I come across a space-based RTS as visually appealing as Falling Frontier, I believe myself, “This will be the one!” Forget the other games; this is the one where I finally get over my phobia of menus! Now I’ve failed. It’s possible, though, that this one will be the one you choose.

Despite having been in the works for four years by a single human, this work appears to have been produced by a hundred people at Paradox. See how those spacecraft blow up! It’s all about dominating a randomly formed star system through the application of intelligence and reason. Still, there’s the option to create your own ships, conduct raids, and engage in other awesome space-strategic activities that leave me wishing I had a bigger brain.

Bill

You, Bill the squirrel, are very skilled at woodworking, and you discover an alien infant in your garden. Throughout all of human history, this story has been told. As a result, Bill, you’re playing a simulation game in which you have to provide for the alien infant by making and harvesting various items. And the whole point is to investigate the ideas behind recycling. That has the oddest elevator pitch ever, yet it actually seems like it may be cute.

That’s It, We’re Doomed

Consider this: A split-screen, local co-op game for one to four players where you try to keep your spaceship afloat in perilous conditions while viewing it from the inside and the outside at the same time. Yikes. It’s up to the players to defend the ship from attackers while taking on a variety of duties, from captain to janitor. It’s a perfect storm of disorganization and switching gears, or, as I like to put it, teamwork went wrong.

Quartet appears to be a turn-based RPG that pays homage to the old form with impressive fidelity. However, you can only use four at a time in combat, switching them out as necessary using the tag system. It’s also a set of four stories, and you can play them in any sequence you like (since this is Octotraveller, of course).

There’s a lot riding on the success of this project, and for a small independent team of only five people, it seems like they’re up to the challenge.

Dreambound

This guy’s no big shot, but his noggin’ is tiny. So, here’s Dreambound, a visual novel that just had a successful Kickstarter (raising over $30,000), giving us all the chance to watch handsome young men gaze longingly at one another. It’s a case of boy love.

This intriguingly drawn and written narrative also features strange murders, nightmares that infiltrate reality, and demons from the main character Noah’s past.

The Tides’ Sky

Wow, check out this amazingness! It appears to occupy the space between RPGs and point-and-click adventures that are sorely underutilized. In Sky of Tides, we follow Rin as she searches for her missing father and, in the process, attempts to rescue the planet Numen from the verge of war. (NUMEN!) The isometric world you discover will be shaped by the choices you make, and I can’t wait to put that promise to the test.

Unconquered Earth

Outside our solar system… A deep space simulation, Terra Invicta quickly brought to mind Stellaris despite its Earth-centric orientation. A group of modders most well-known for their work on XCOM: Long War has created this.

After the success of that mod, the developers decided to go commercial, and their first product is Terra Invicta, a space exploration simulation in which you must stop (or help) an alien invasion of Earth. The game has been available in early access for a few months, and because of its depth and breadth, it has been receiving rave reviews on Steam.

In this Arkanoid-inspired game, the blocks you destroy fire at you. Why hasn’t someone thought of this before? (I believe you will discover that there was an example of this on the Amiga Rupture 3400 in Germany, in the parallel dimension of Raaaaaaa – That Guy.)

This seems like a no-brainer, but I’ve never seen The Blocks Shoot At You: An outbreak of bullet hell. This could become my next big thing, at which I will be hopelessly bad.

Exhibit Your Teeth! Phobolis

When I can’t tell if a trailer is for a modern FPS or a classic one, I become the most excited. We’re witnessing a complete scene right now. Phobolis is right at home; the trailer for the game starts off looking like a damaged VHS tape that will make your grandchildren cry, before transitioning to a dirty, old-school shooter.

The game’s alpha test build is available for purchase on Itch for one dollar, or you can wait until the following year when it is scheduled for release.

Rocket Ship

A game about a space cat detective who solves a crime on a spaceship full of sentient carpets has my full attention. You play the role of Domino, the cat detective, and look for a jewel thief throughout the ship from a third-person perspective.

No Subdivision

There are rules that require me to include a card game in every one of these. The cyberpunk approach of Zero Division promises a mashup of Magic: The Gathering and Slay the Spire. You get to choose three out of nine unique characters, each of whom has its own set of 40 playing cards.

Additionally, there will be no deck thinning due to the fixed deck sizes. Woo! The epic 3D monsters and robots waving their arms and weapons at each other across the table are what really draws me in. We’re scheduled to release a demo in the spring of ’23, and you can bet that I’ll be among its featured players.

Extreme Evolution: Drive to Divinity

Always finish on an existential non-linear psychedelic platformer, that’s what my grandmother taught me. Not one to refuse sage advice here’s Extreme Evolution: Drive to Divinity by Sam Atlas, creator of the 2022 IGF Nuovo nomination, Space Hole 2020.

Extreme Evolution looks just so spectacularly fucked up, like if David Lynch had made The Lawnmower Man, and I think I’m going to be dreaming about this brief trailer for the rest of my life. Oh god, that spider virus thing.
