The game production process continues, and the action RPG Last Epoch will be released on February 21, 2024. Last Epoch, which was first launched in 2019, describes itself as an isometric action RPG fan’s ARPG, created by and for individuals who enjoy a plethora of customizable talents and loot, as well as a horde of monsters to battle.
The 1.0 version will be considered the complete game, with the Warlock and Falconer classes coming soon. It will also contain two Item Factions, a system that allows players to select between acquiring loot for themselves or participating in a larger marketplace where they may trade goods with others.
Following the release, the Eleventh Hour team plans to deliver updates every few months in what they call “Cycles” that will include “end-game content, skills, unique items, gameplay systems, quality-of-life features, etc.”
In 2019, PC Gamer named Last Epoch a fantastic new action RPG. “Last Epoch’s skill system is a brilliant evolution of Path of Exile’s labyrinthine web of upgrades and Diablo 3’s rune modifications,” stated Eric Watson. He also praised the music.
We checked back in with Last Epoch in 2023, when it debuted four years of improvements at Gamescom alongside the runemaster, one of its 15 classes, after launching multiplayer. At the time, Eleventh Hour CEO Judd Cobler discussed the difficulty of implementing ARPG-style multiplayer.
“Creating multiplayer for one of these games is complex because it’s not just matchmaking, you drop into a match and [then] the match is over and then you dissipate, it’s drop-in, drop-out multiplayer that is persistent,” Cobler explained. “You enter cities and see all these other players, and it’s really—right below MMOs, it’s probably the most sophisticated version of multiplayer that you can design.” The launch of Last Epoch multiplayer “has gone incredibly well,” he said.
Last Epoch is available on Steam for $35. The 1.0 version will be released on February 21, 2024. Anyone who orders before the release date will receive a unique cosmetic pet if that’s your thing.
Last Epoch was created by Eleventh Hour, a group of game creators that gathered on the r/gamedev subreddit in 2017 and decided to build “the perfect ARPG.” It was Kickstarted in 2018 and launched to Steam Early Access in 2019, selling more than 800,000 units.
