Psychonauts 2 Developer Didn’t Like the Idea
While speaking with NME, Schafer remarked on the production of Psychonauts 2, saying, “Psychonauts 2 was such a long haul. Again, many things went wrong; we even lost our publisher, just like with the first game. It was a wild ride, and there were times when I seriously doubted that anything would turn out well.
There are, of course, causes for Schafer to be concerned. The second installment of the Psychonauts franchise delves deeply into discussions of mental health, but it’s also a comedy in other respects, so the filmmakers had to tread a fine line between being entertaining and respectful of sensitive subject matter. “Because it’s a comedy, it was incredibly crucial that people understand we weren’t making fun of individuals but were looking playfully and tenderly at the human psyche,” Schafer said.

Naturally, Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft during the game’s development, and this variable proved to be exactly what Double Fine, a studio known for its independence years before the acquisition, was all about.
To keep the creatives and their vision at the center of the project, Microsoft was able to give resources, which apparently allowed Double Fine to develop the game to the extent that they’d envisioned without compromises due to financial cost. Schafer claims that today’s Double Fine is “bound only by our inventiveness” and that the company’s “standing for” is “handling the crew well and making amazing games – very innovative games.”

However, Schafer acknowledged the significance of the Microsoft funding, stating, “If we went out of business, the whole four years of working on Psychonauts would have been for nothing – that version of Psychonauts evaporating into the ether was incredibly terrible to think about.” In the end, it seems like a win-win situation for everyone involved. Meanwhile, production on Psychonauts 3 has stalled.
