Halo Infinite will not receive any additional seasons, as 343 Industries overhauled its release plan two years after its launch. Instead, Operations will support Halo Infinite for four to six weeks.
This means there will be no Season 6, following the release of Season 5 in October. 343 says the unexpected shift in pace is to allow developers to work on “brand new projects,” implying that the studio is moving on from Halo Infinite’s multiplayer.
These comments were made during a livestream discussing the Halo franchise’s future. As we now know, Infinite’s future will be vastly different from what many fans had anticipated. However, based on player reactions, the decision may not be unpopular within the community.
“We’re changing how we approach Infinite going forward,” says community director Brian Jarrard. “The gist of it is that we’re kind of no longer referring to seasons, we’re shifting away from seasons.”
He goes on to discuss what this means for the immediate future. “Semantically, for what it’s worth, our January 30th update will henceforth be known as CU29 […] Future updates are going to be punctuated by [the] ongoing Operations model.”
Overall, many fans appear to be positive about the franchise’s future following this livestream, even as it becomes evident that we will not receive the massive Halo Infinite updates of the past.
Just three months ago, our own Eric Switzer wrote about how Infinite was finally finding its feet with the release of Season 5, which might change now that the updates are becoming smaller.
At the very least, Community Update 29 (CU29) will be available on January 30. Also, because Operations is considerably smaller, they should be with us more frequently, eliminating the issue that Seasons encountered after launch.
Unfortunately, it’s no surprise that Halo Infinite’s continued support has been reduced. As with other gaming firms, 343 Industries had massive layoffs around the start of 2023. When combined with the rumor that 343 has been creating another Halo game since 2022, there aren’t many spare hands to continue working on Infinite upgrades.
That is all guesswork, though, and we’ll have to see whether 343 throws any light on why this decision was taken later on.
