A single particle of sand is used to its fullest potential in what looks like a teaser for the next Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat 12, a game confirmed but not fully and officially published, has a glimpse of what’s to come after a 30th anniversary “thank you” video message from NetherRealm Studios.
Although brief, it provides a glimpse of what NetherRealm intends to achieve with MK’s backstory and nuanced history. Mortal Kombat franchise co-creator Ed Boon says in the video posted on Monday: “Thank you Mortal Kombat fans for 30 years of amazing support. […] We’re not quite done yet.”

The movie zooms in on a single sand particle, which then violently erupts, as shown within an hourglass. Fans of Mortal Kombat 11 will remember the hourglass as the potent tool Kronika, the Titan known as the Keeper of Time, controls and which is at the center of the game’s time-bending narrative, will use.
Young Johnny Cage and adult Johnny Cage meet in Mortal Kombat 11 thanks to Kronika’s ability to shift history, alter time, and transport individuals from the past into the present. The hourglass in her logo represents the myriad timelines that Kronika has created and modified to balance Mortal Kombat’s multiple worlds.
After Shang Tsung vanquishes Kronika after Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath narrative expansion, Kronika’s abilities—powered by her hourglass and crown—are taken by MK’s wicked, shape-shifting wizard.
With intentions to start a New Era of the Mortal Kombat chronology (and bring back his deceased comrades), Liu Kang tricks Tsung into time travel, defeats him, and takes Kronika’s skills. Liu Kang goes back in time to train the original Kung Lao for future Mortal Kombat competitions.
At least, it is what occurs in one of Aftermath’s endings. In the other, Shang Tsung triumphs once again after beating Liu Kang, taking his thunder and fire god abilities, and eventually taking down Earthrealm, Outworld, and Netherrealm (with Chaosrealm and Orderrealm coming up next).
The goal of Shang Tsung’s plan—who is now a giant—is complete realm devastation and dominance. Aftermath’s Liu Kang ending seems to be the most rational canonical decision for NetherRealm Studios.
If the developer intends to create a new trilogy of games and reset the MK timeline, one of Kronika’s current timelines being permanently destroyed seems like an excellent place to start.
The environment of the Mortal Kombat tale that many gamers are acquainted with may be brought to life in NetherRealm thanks to the abundance of room and recognizable characters.

There is no reason why Elder Gods like Raiden and Fujin, as well as the forefathers of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile, couldn’t be present if Liu Kang and (The Great) Kung Lao existed 500 years ago.
Characters like Kitana and Goro, who date back thousands of years, would also be present. When you have a magical hourglass, anything may happen. This year, Mortal Kombat 12 should be released. Indeed NetherRealm has immediate plans to demonstrate it.
