Microsoft had planned to discontinue a free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate benefit for the majority of its 238,000 employees in January. Still, the corporation has reversed that decision in response to employee objections.
According to The Verge, Microsoft employees have expressed concerns about the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate feature being phased off in 2024, with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer personally investigating the problem.

Spencer has now announced that the decision will be reversed and that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will continue to be available to Microsoft workers. Spencer’s complete message to Microsoft employees on the company’s internal Viva platform is as follows:
After further discussion with the team, I want to reaffirm that there will be no changes to Game Pass availability in 2024. You will continue to have access to the Game Pass offer if you have it today. I appreciate the time it took to catch up, and I apologize for any confusion or questions. And thank you for your support of Xbox.

Microsoft workers will continue to have free access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, as they have since the subscription option’s inception in 2019. Microsoft employees have long had free access to Xbox memberships, with Xbox Live Gold formerly provided as a benefit to employees.
It’s unclear why Microsoft decided to withdraw the perk in the first place, but it looks to be more of a benefits / HR decision because Spencer was unaware it was planned and promptly moved to reverse the change.
