Microsoft Has Announced Upcoming Price Increases For Xbox
We have already witnessed extraordinary actions, such as Sony increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 two years after its initial introduction, and Microsoft is now telling users that we may expect similar price increases across all of their platforms and services. We simply do not yet know which ones they are.
Earlier this week, while speaking at a conference hosted by the Wall Street Journal, Spencer was quoted as saying, “I do think at some point we’ll have to raise the prices on certain things; however, going into this holiday we thought it was important to maintain the prices.” Tom Warren of The Verge was the one who reported on this quote.
“We have maintained the price of our console, we have maintained the price of our games, and we have maintained the price of our subscription,” he continued. “I don’t believe that we’ll be able to continue doing that indefinitely. I do believe that at some point in the future we will be required to increase some pricing on particular items.
That is a really deceptive statement to make! It’s possible that he means only one or two of those goods will see price rises, and he’s leaving it up to us to guess which ones. It is highly likely that Microsoft will raise the prices of its own games in the near future given the fact that a large number of competing game publishers have already begun to implement similar price increases. Additionally, an increase in the cost of Game Pass subscriptions is almost certainly in the works as well.
Xbox consoles, on the other hand, are a different matter. We are used to consoles getting cheaper over time, not more costly as time goes on, therefore the price increase of the PS5 was a significant story because it had never happened before that the price of a console would go up after it had been released.
But this is not a normal time; the inflationary crisis has root causes, and they lie in everything from labor issues to unprecedented (in modern times) component shortages to corporate profiteering. These are things that we haven’t had to factor in (or at least factor into this degree) when looking at console prices in the past. Nevertheless, we are living in times that are not normal.
