Insomniac Games, hot off the heels of the PlayStation 5 exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, seems to be planning its next game. Additionally, although the company has recently been well-known for a string of very popular single-player games, this new project seems to be geared at multiplayer.
The company has five available positions due to the development of a “multiplayer project.” Even though the specifics of this initiative are being kept under wraps, the postings have already given us some hints.

Insomniac Games
To begin, “in-depth knowledge of melee combat systems, enemy design, and boss design” is listed as a need for the position of Systems Designer (Multiplayer). There are no hints provided for the Story Lead position, albeit “experience with multiplayer storylines is appreciated.”
This appears to imply that there will be a cohesive storyline throughout the whole project, despite its multiplayer emphasis. Maybe it’s because of Insomniac’s connection with Spider-Man, but these really hazy specifics had me thinking of a Marvel multi-player game. Spider-Verse, a multiplayer game featuring Marvel’s web-slinger, would be fantastic, yet Sony doesn’t even hold the video game rights to him. Still, this is just my speculation.
Though the majority of Insomniac Games’ recent output has been single-player games, the company is not without expertise in the multiplayer space. Sunset Overdrive, a 2014 Xbox exclusive that was critically acclaimed, was the studio’s final multiplayer-focused game. Although there was a multiplayer feature in Sunset Overdrive, it was mainly designed for solo play. And since it was so incredibly wonderful, all the original game’s players are eager for a sequel.
However, just because “melee combat systems” was mentioned doesn’t indicate that close-quarters fighting would be a major priority in Insomniac’s future game. Since it was merely a bullet point under “other abilities,” maybe it wasn’t crucial after all.
We still don’t know what the mystery Insomniac Games multiplayer title is, but here’s hoping it’s either a spiritual successor to Sunset Overdrive or a Marvel multiplayer game like Spider-Verse.
